Hiroshima & Miyajima by Private Car: Real 8h Itinerary
Reproduced from the operations sheet of a real June 2026 multi-day charter (party of 5). Timings show the typical flow.
Hiroshima is the day travelers most often regret compressing — and most often plan wrong, by trying to charter their Kansai car for a 600 km round trip. The professional pattern costs less and sees more: let the Shinkansen do the distance, and let a Hiroshima-based car do the day.

Can I Do Hiroshima and Miyajima Without a Car?
Hiroshima is genuinely easy without a car, and a page that skipped straight to charter pricing would be leaving out the option most visitors should take.

The point that decides this route, and it is not in our favour: Miyajima is an island. Everybody takes the ferry — a private car cannot cross, it waits at Miyajimaguchi. So on the single most memorable half of this day, the car buys you nothing at all. What it replaces is a ¥240 tram ride.
Against roughly ¥1,000 per person on trams and ferries, the 8-hour RydAgent charter at ¥72,000 is about ¥8,000 each for a party of nine, or ¥18,000 each for four. That is a real gap and we are not going to dress it up.
How Do I Get From Hiroshima to Miyajima?
Three public ways, and a car is not one of them for the crossing itself.

The boat from the Peace Park is the one most first-time visitors don't know about, and it is the answer if you want to walk out of the museum and be on the island without a tram, a train or a pier change. It is ten times the price of the tram-and-ferry route and it books out on fine days in autumn, so reserve. The JR Pass route is the answer for rail-pass holders — show the pass at the JR ferry window and pay the ¥100 tax separately. And the private car does the same thing on this leg as everyone else: it takes you to the Miyajimaguchi pier and waits there, because no vehicle crosses.
When Is a Private Car Worth It in Hiroshima?
- Group size and luggage. Nine people with cases moving between Hiroshima Station, the Peace Park and Miyajimaguchi on trams is a different experience from nine people in one vehicle. The tram is fine with a daypack and awkward with a suitcase.
- The morning and evening ends. The car takes you from the hotel door to the Peace Park entrance and collects you from the ferry terminal at dusk — the two moments when a tired group with a heavy museum visit behind them least wants to work out a tram platform.
- Pace. The museum deserves an unhurried morning and the island rewards a late afternoon. A car lets the day breathe; the tram makes you decide in advance.
- RydAgent Hiroshima-based HiAce, 8 hours: ¥72,000 (¥9,000/h, driver, fuel, tolls and parking included), dispatched from the local depot rather than driven ~300 km from Kansai — which is why the hours go to the sites rather than the expressway.
When to skip it: if you are one to four people travelling light and staying in Hiroshima anyway, take the tram and the ferry. It is about a tenth of the cost, it runs every few minutes, and it goes to exactly the same two places.
Peace Park First or Miyajima First?
Peace Park in the morning is deliberate: the museum is quietest early, and the visit deserves unhurried space. Miyajima rewards the afternoon — softer light on the torii, day-trip crowds ebbing on the later ferries. The operated run followed exactly this arc: heavy morning, gentle afternoon. Reverse it and you get the museum at peak crush and the island at its most crowded.

This was Day 8 of a real 12-night trip on our cars — between the Kyoto → Nara → Osaka transfer and the USJ day.
Pick by Scenario
- 1–4 people, light bags, staying in Hiroshima: tram and ferry, about ¥1,000 a head for the day. Take it; it goes to the same two places.
- Rail-pass holders: JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi and the JR ferry — both on the pass, only the ¥100 visitor tax to pay.
- You want to step from the museum straight onto the island: the World Heritage Sea Route boat from the Peace Park pier, ¥2,400–2,500, about 45 minutes, and book it.
- Day trip from Osaka or Kyoto: Shinkansen down, a Hiroshima-based car for the 8 hours on the ground, Shinkansen back — not a 600 km charter from Kansai.
- 5–9 people, or a group with suitcases and a heavy museum morning: one RydAgent HiAce for the day, ¥72,000 all-in, ¥8,000 a head at nine. The car covers the two ends of the day the tram is worst at; the island is still on foot.
