Hiroshima & Miyajima by Private Car: Real 8h Itinerary
Reproduced from the operations sheet of a real June 2026 grand tour (party of 5, licensed English-speaking guide added for this day). Timings show the typical flow.
Hiroshima is the day travelers most often regret compressing — and most often plan wrong, by trying to charter their Kansai car for a 600 km round trip. The professional pattern costs less and sees more: let the Shinkansen do the distance, and let a Hiroshima-based car do the day.
The day at a glance
| Time (typical) | Stop | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| early | Osaka hotel → Shin-Osaka Station | short transfer | Touring vehicle handles the station door |
| ~8:00–9:30 | Shinkansen Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima | ~1.5h | Reserved seats; the fast leg |
| 9:30 | Hiroshima-based HiAce waiting at the station | 8h window begins | Local driver, local knowledge, no deadhead cost |
| 9:45–12:15 | Peace Memorial Park & Museum, A-Bomb Dome | ~2.5h | Morning = quieter museum; guide carries the context |
| 12:15–13:15 | Lunch (okonomiyaki, guide-picked) | ~60 min | — |
| 13:30–14:00 | Drive to Miyajimaguchi ferry terminal | ~30 min | Driver waits with your bags |
| 14:00–17:00 | Miyajima on foot: ferry, Itsukushima Shrine, the floating torii, Omotesando street | ~3h incl. ferries | Afternoon light on the torii; crowds thinning |
| 17:15–17:45 | Return to Hiroshima Station | ~30 min | 8h window closes |
| evening | Shinkansen back → Osaka dinner transfer | ~1.5h + short run | The touring vehicle picks the evening back up |
Why a local car, in numbers
- Hiroshima-based HiAce, 8 hours: ¥72,000 (¥9,000/h, driver, fuel, tolls and parking included) — every hour spent at the sites
- The alternative: driving the Kansai touring car means ~300 km each way before a single sight — 6+ charter hours burned on expressway
- What makes it possible: a dispatch network with fleets in six regions hands the day to whichever depot serves it best — the same per-leg logic that runs our Alpine Route relay
The sequencing logic
Peace Park in the morning is deliberate: the museum is quietest early, and the visit deserves unhurried space. Miyajima rewards the afternoon — softer light on the torii, day-trip crowds ebbing on the later ferries. The operated run followed exactly this arc, with the guide managing tone as much as tickets: heavy morning, gentle afternoon. Reverse it and you get the museum at peak crush and the island at its most crowded.
