Tokyo Station private car pickup after the Shinkansen
RydAgent's one-way fixed price per car from Tokyo Station (Toyota Alphard, up to 4 passengers), tolls included: Hakone ¥40,000, Lake Kawaguchiko ¥46,000, Narita ¥24,000, Haneda ¥16,000. Below: which exit to take off the Shinkansen and where cars can stop.
Quick answer
RydAgent picks up at Tokyo Station for a fixed price per car: Tokyo Station to Hakone is ¥40,000 in a Toyota Alphard (up to 4 passengers) or ¥45,000 in a Toyota HiAce (up to 9 passengers), about 80 minutes to Hakone-Yumoto in light traffic; to Lake Kawaguchiko (Mt Fuji) ¥46,000; to Narita Airport ¥24,000; to Haneda ¥16,000. The Tokaido–Sanyo Shinkansen (platforms 14–19) has five exits straight to the street, all on the Yaesu side; the Tohoku, Hokuriku and Joetsu Shinkansen (platforms 20–23) exit at the Nihombashi gate or through the transfer gates into the JR concourse. Cars stop at the general-vehicle bays on both sides of the station, not at the ticket gates: your driver parks at the nearest legal spot and sends you a photo of the car and its exact position before you come out. To be met inside the station and helped with bags, add Driver assistance when you book (¥3,000 per 30 minutes for an Alphard, ¥4,000 for a HiAce). You’re always in the loop — AI or a real person responds instantly, so you’re never left wondering where your driver is. Book in 30 seconds at rydagent.com — no sign-up, no login required.
Which Tokyo Station exit is closest to the Shinkansen?
For the Tokaido–Sanyo Shinkansen from Kyoto, Osaka and Nagoya (JR Central, platforms 14–19), use the Yaesu side: all five of its gates that open straight to the street — Nihombashi, Yaesu North, Yaesu Central North, Yaesu Central South and Yaesu South — are there.
For the Tohoku, Hokkaido, Yamagata, Akita, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen (JR East, platforms 20–23), the only gate straight to the street is Nihombashi, at the north end of the Yaesu side; their North and South transfer gates lead into the JR concourse, from which you leave by the Yaesu or Marunouchi gates. JR's standard connection time between the two groups of Shinkansen platforms is 8 minutes.
Shinkansen at Tokyo Station: platforms and exits
| Line | Platforms | Gates straight to the street | Side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokaido / Sanyo Shinkansen (JR Central) | 14–19 | Nihombashi, Yaesu North, Yaesu Central North, Yaesu Central South, Yaesu South | Yaesu |
| Tohoku, Hokkaido, Yamagata, Akita, Joetsu, Hokuriku Shinkansen (JR East) | 20–23 | Nihombashi (the North and South transfer gates lead into the JR concourse) | Yaesu, or either side via the JR gates |
Where can a private car pick you up at Tokyo Station?
A private car picks you up at the general-vehicle bays, not at the ticket gates: on the Yaesu side at the north end of the Yaesu station plaza, by the Gran Tokyo North Tower and Daimaru (buses and taxis use the southern and middle parts of the plaza), and on the Marunouchi side in the north and south traffic plazas, along the edge facing Marunouchi Central Plaza. JR's current station maps don't mark these bays, and RydAgent found no published limit on how long a car may stop there (checked 2 October 2026).
A RydAgent driver contacts you before pickup, parks at the nearest spot where the car may legally stop, sends you a photo of the car and its exact position, and waits by the car; station pickups have no name board. To have the driver come into the station to meet you and help with bags, add Driver assistance when you book: ¥3,000 per 30 minutes for an Alphard, ¥4,000 for a HiAce.
Taxis queue at three ranks: Yaesu (closest to the Yaesu Central South gate of the Tokaido Shinkansen), Marunouchi North and Marunouchi South. There is no taxi rank at the Nihombashi exit.

Tokyo Station to Hakone after the Shinkansen: train or private car?
For one or two people with light bags, the Tokaido Shinkansen to Odawara and the Hakone Tozan Railway is the cheap choice — ¥3,640–4,170 per person to Hakone-Yumoto; for a family or group with suitcases, or a ryokan away from the railway, RydAgent's fixed price is ¥40,000 per Toyota Alphard (up to 4 passengers) or ¥45,000 per Toyota HiAce (up to 9), tolls included — about 80 minutes to Hakone-Yumoto and about 100 minutes to Gora or Moto-Hakone on Lake Ashi in light traffic.
The fixed price covers anywhere in Hakone town — Hakone-Yumoto, Miyanoshita, Kowakidani, Gora, Sengokuhara, Owakudani and the Lake Ashi shore (Moto-Hakone, Hakone-machi, Togendai) all cost the same.
The Romancecar to Hakone doesn't start at Tokyo Station: it runs from Shinjuku in about 80 minutes (the fastest in 75), with a ¥1,200 limited-express ticket on top of the fare, and the 'Metro Hakone' from Otemachi, a short walk from Tokyo Station, takes about 110 minutes and runs once a day on weekdays.

Tokyo taxis offer fixed fares to Haneda (tolls paid on top) and to Narita (fixed fare plus tolls, booked in advance), set by zone in the Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association's tables.
Can I leave or send luggage at Tokyo Station?
Yes: the Tokyo Station luggage counter outside the Yaesu South gate takes bags from 9:30 to 20:00 for ¥500 (up to 100 cm across three sides), ¥1,000 (up to 200 cm) or ¥2,000 (over 200 cm) per item per day. Bags handed in by 15:00 at two counters inside the station can also be delivered the same day to hotels in Tokyo's 23 wards and Urayasu (¥1,800–3,000 by size; not to private rentals) — but not to Hakone or Lake Kawaguchiko, which is where a car with the luggage on board helps.

Tokyo Station pickup: questions
Train or private car from Tokyo Station to Hakone — which is better with luggage?
For one or two people with light bags the train is far cheaper: ¥3,640–4,170 per person by Shinkansen to Odawara and the Hakone Tozan Railway to Hakone-Yumoto. For a family or group with suitcases, RydAgent's private car is a fixed ¥40,000 per Toyota Alphard (up to 4 passengers and 4 large suitcases) or ¥45,000 per HiAce (up to 9), tolls included, about 80 minutes to Hakone-Yumoto and about 100 minutes to Gora in light traffic — no change at Odawara and no carrying bags.
Is there a meet-and-greet at Tokyo Station for Shinkansen arrivals?
Not at the ticket gate by default. Your RydAgent driver contacts you before pickup, parks at the nearest legal spot, sends you a photo of the car and its exact position, and waits by the car. To be met inside the station and helped with luggage, add Driver assistance when you book: ¥3,000 per 30 minutes for an Alphard, ¥4,000 for a HiAce.
What happens if my Shinkansen is late?
Message us or your driver. Free waiting is 30 minutes from your booked pickup time; after that, waiting is ¥6,000 per hour for an Alphard or ¥8,000 for a HiAce, charged in 15-minute blocks (under 15 minutes is free).
How much is a taxi from Tokyo Station to Hakone?
There is no fixed taxi fare to Hakone — Tokyo's taxi association publishes fixed fares only to Haneda, Narita and Tokyo Disney Resort — so you pay the meter: ¥500 for the first 1.0 km and ¥100 for every 232 m after that (from 20 April 2026), 20% more from 22:00 to 5:00, plus tolls. For the roughly 85 km to Hakone-Yumoto that comes to about ¥37,000 on the meter plus about ¥2,650 in tolls on a clear road (RydAgent's calculation from the official fare table), more in traffic — about the same as RydAgent's fixed ¥40,000 per Alphard, which includes tolls and doesn't rise in traffic.
Which side of Tokyo Station is closest to the Tokaido Shinkansen?
The Yaesu side. All five Tokaido–Sanyo Shinkansen gates that open straight to the street are on the Yaesu side, and the Yaesu taxi rank is right by the Yaesu Central South gate.
