Hakone with a JR Pass: Freepass, Odawara Transfer or Car?

Quick AnswerThe JR Pass covers the Tokaido Shinkansen to Odawara on a Kodama or Hikari — not the Nozomi, which doesn't stop there anyway — and nothing beyond: Hakone's mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, lake cruise and most buses are covered by Odakyu's Hakone Freepass, not by JR. With full-size luggage, a family or a group, RydAgent's fixed price from Tokyo to a Hakone hotel is ¥40,000 for a Toyota Alphard (up to 4 passengers) or ¥45,000 for a Toyota HiAce (up to 9 passengers); if you ride the JR Pass to Odawara, a car from Odawara Station to any Hakone ryokan is ¥25,000 / ¥30,000. You're always in the loop — AI or a real person responds instantly, so you'll never be left at the airport wondering where your driver is while juggling luggage and family. You've activated your 7-day JR Pass, and Hakone is on the list between Tokyo and Kyoto. The pass will get you as far as Odawara on the shinkansen — and then it stops working, because Hakone's trains, cable car, ropeway, pirate ships and most of its buses are run by the Odakyu group, not JR. Here's what each pass covers, which Hakone Freepass to buy if you already hold a JR Pass, and when a car to or from your ryokan is the better call.

Does the JR Pass cover Hakone?

Only as far as Odawara.

  • Tokyo to Odawara: covered on the Tokaido Shinkansen — but only on Hikari and Kodama trains. The JR Pass is not valid for any seat on the Nozomi unless you buy a separate [ONLY WITH JAPAN RAIL PASS] NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket, and the Nozomi doesn't stop at Odawara anyway. Every Kodama stops there; a Hikari stops roughly once every two hours in the daytime.
  • Odawara into Hakone: not covered. The Hakone Tozan Train to Hakone-Yumoto and Gora, the Hakone Tozan Cable Car, the Hakone Ropeway, the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise on Lake Ashi and the Odakyu Romancecar are private railways and services; under the JR Pass rules, you pay the fare on a private railway.
  • Luggage on the shinkansen: a bag of 161–250 cm in total dimensions needs a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area; boarding with one without that reservation costs ¥1,000.

A 7-day ordinary JR Pass is ¥50,000 bought on the official website, or ¥53,000 through an overseas agent. For a Tokyo–Hakone–Kyoto trip it covers both shinkansen legs; it just doesn't reach the hotels.

What does the Hakone Freepass cover — and which one do you need?

Odakyu's Hakone Freepass is the pass for getting around inside Hakone. It covers:

  • the Hakone Tozan Train, Hakone Tozan Cable Car and Hakone Ropeway;
  • the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (the "pirate ships") on Lake Ashi;
  • Hakone Tozan Bus, Odakyu Highway Bus and Tokai Bus in designated areas, and the sightseeing-facility loop bus;
  • with the Shinjuku version, a round trip on the Odakyu Line between Shinjuku and Odawara;
  • discounts at about 70 museums, baths and restaurants.

A Romancecar seat is never included: it needs a separate limited express ticket. There are two versions:

Best forA multi-city trip with long shinkansen legsHakone from Tokyo without a JR PassJR Pass holders, and anyone arriving from Kyoto or Osaka

With a JR Pass, buy the Odawara version: the shinkansen already covers the Tokyo–Odawara leg that the Shinjuku version pays for. Without a JR Pass, the Shinjuku version plus a Romancecar seat is the classic way in — the Romancecar takes about 80 minutes from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, and on its own it's ¥2,470 one way.

Train or car: how do the options compare?

Way inWhat you doCost
JR Pass + Freepass (Odawara)Shinkansen to Odawara, change to the Hakone Tozan Train, then a bus, cable car or taxi to the hotel — with your bagsPass already paid + ¥6,000 per adult for a 2-day Freepass
Romancecar + Freepass (Shinjuku)Romancecar from Shinjuku, about 80 minutes, then the same mountain network¥7,100 per adult for 2 days + Romancecar seat
JR Pass + car from OdawaraShinkansen to Odawara on the pass, then a car from the station to the ryokan door¥25,000 (Alphard, up to 4) / ¥30,000 (HiAce, up to 9) per vehicle
Car from TokyoHotel door to ryokan door, about 80 minutes¥40,000 (Alphard) / ¥45,000 (HiAce) per vehicle

These aren't quite the same product: the Freepass also gives you two or three days of rides inside Hakone, while a car fare is the transfer only. If you'll ride the ropeway and the lake cruise anyway, keep the Freepass for sightseeing and use a car only for the leg with the luggage.

When is a car the better call?

  • Full-size suitcases. Odakyu's own answer to luggage is a baggage service: leave bags at the Hakone-Yumoto Station counter by 12:00 and they're delivered the same day to affiliated hotels for ¥1,500 per regular bag or ¥2,500 per large bag each way, and collected back at the station between 13:30 and 18:30 after check-out. A car does the same job door to door, with you in it.
  • A family or a group of 5 to 9. One HiAce from Tokyo is ¥45,000 — ¥5,000 each when nine travel together. For comparison, the largest car Uber lists at Japan's main airports takes 5 passengers, and 9-seat jumbo taxis must be reserved in advance, while one HiAce carries up to 9 passengers with 9 large suitcases and 9 carry-ons.
  • Straight from the plane. Haneda to Hakone is ¥46,000 (Alphard) / ¥59,000 (HiAce), about 1.5–2 hours; Narita to Hakone ¥59,000 / ¥72,000 — no change at Tokyo or Odawara.
  • Onward to Kyoto on the JR Pass. Take a car from the ryokan to Odawara Station (¥25,000 / ¥30,000) and board a Hikari or Kodama west on your pass — no mountain railway with bags on check-out day.
  • A day trip from Tokyo without staying over. A Hakone day charter from Tokyo is 8 hours with the driver waiting at each stop: ¥64,000 for an Alphard or ¥72,000 for a HiAce. Tell us the places you'd like to see and we'll check the driving times fit your hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the JR Pass or the Hakone Freepass better for a trip to Hakone?

You may want both, because they cover different things. The JR Pass gets you from Tokyo to Odawara on a Hikari or Kodama; the Hakone Freepass covers the mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, lake cruise and designated buses inside Hakone. With a JR Pass, buy the Freepass version that starts at Odawara; without one, the Shinjuku version (¥7,100 for 2 days) includes the Odakyu round trip from Tokyo.

Can I take the Nozomi to Odawara with a JR Pass?

No. The Nozomi doesn't stop at Odawara, and the JR Pass doesn't cover any Nozomi seat unless you buy the separate [ONLY WITH JAPAN RAIL PASS] NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket. Take a Kodama, which stops at Odawara, or one of the Hikari trains that stop there — roughly one every two hours in the daytime.

Does the JR Pass cover the Romancecar or the Hakone Tozan Railway?

No. Both are run by private railways in the Odakyu group, and the JR Pass rules say you pay the fare on a private railway. The Hakone Freepass covers the Hakone Tozan Railway; the Romancecar always needs a separate seat ticket, even with the Freepass.

Which Hakone Freepass should I buy if I have a JR Pass?

The version that starts at Odawara (Odakyu calls it 'From Odawara, Hakone area only'). Your JR Pass already covers Tokyo to Odawara, so you don't need the Odakyu round trip included in the Shinjuku version. It's ¥6,000 per adult for 2 days or ¥6,400 for 3 days.

Is a private car to Hakone worth it?

With full-size suitcases, small children or a group, often yes. RydAgent's fixed price from Tokyo to a Hakone hotel is ¥40,000 for a Toyota Alphard (up to 4 passengers) or ¥45,000 for a Toyota HiAce (up to 9 passengers) — ¥5,000 each when nine travel together — about 80 minutes door to door. Two adults with light bags will spend far less on the train.

How much is a car from Odawara Station to a Hakone ryokan?

¥25,000 for an Alphard or ¥30,000 for a HiAce, anywhere in Hakone — Hakone-Yumoto, Gora, Sengokuhara or Lake Ashi — with tolls, parking, fuel and taxes included. It's a common way for JR Pass holders with luggage to finish the trip.

How late can I book a car from Hakone?

Online until 20:00 Japan time the day before the ride, subject to availability; for anything sooner, message us on WhatsApp and we'll check whether a car can be arranged. Transfers picking up in the Tokyo area (including Narita and Haneda airports) can be booked online up to 4 hours before pickup (bookings made between 20:00 and 08:00 Japan time can start from 12:00), and charters — including a Hakone day charter from Tokyo — until 20:00 Japan time the day before, subject to availability.

The driver contacted us as soon as we landed in Tokyo. He provided clear instructions how to meet after we got our luggage. He had to wait an extra 30 mins since our plane was delayed. Great service, great / clean car and a nice ride to our hotel. Thanks.

— Henry Avetisyan, Jul 2026

My wife and I had a flawless experience using this transfer service from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Central Tokyo. Although we are in our 70s, we are experienced travelers and usually take public transit or a taxi from airports to hotels. However, this was our first trip to Asia and with a 12-hour flight from Chicago, we decided that we needed to make the hotel transfer easy. And it was. Communication with the company was excellent. They messaged me through WhatsApp several times to make everything was clear. In fact, I messaged them when we landed, that the plane was an hour early and hoped they could pick us up sooner. They responded yes and sure enough our driver,John, was there to meet us past customs. John was very friendly and very professional. His English was excellent. He handled the luggage. The vehicle was comfortable. He made us feel welcome. I highly recommend them and would use them again without hesitation.

Our driver picked us up at our hotel and dropped us at Haneda Airport Departures (Terminal 3) as requested. It was a very comfortable and safe ride and the vehicle was very clean and spacious. Thank you so much!

— Valerie Pendon, Jun 2026

Great experience using this private transfer from our hotel to Haneda Airport. Booking was easy, and when we needed to adjust our pickup time, the operator was very responsive. The driver arrived on time and the ride was smooth and stress-free. Would definitely use again.

Professional service that takes the stress out of airport transfers. Our family has been to Tokyo a few times. Airport transfer by train, taxi, and private car. This service is good value, especially for groups. We had a very comfortable and well kept vehicle. Driver was very professional, polite, and easy to work with. We had an hour long flight delay and sat on the runway for 20 minutes after landing. This service was very flexible and helpful through the situation. Driver was patiently waiting when we arrived.

— Mark OBrien, Jun 2026

Karazawa Ryou was our driver. He texted us his contact info via Whatsap the day before our flight. In between flights, we learned that our connecting flight had been delayed. Instead of arriving at 9:15pm, we would now be arriving at I1:30pm. Such a significant amount of delay time...plus, arriving so much LATER at night, I was worried that our driver would no longer be able to pick us up. I notified him, and he responded, "Don't worry. I'll wait for you. See you later." He even included a smiley face! I went from panic to peace in an instant. As we were exiting the plane, I received a text from him notifying me that we had landed at Terminal 2, so it would be quicker to get out. I should let him know once we had picked up our luggage, and he would be at the exit within one minute with a sign. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly this process went, and the SUV exceeded my expectations. It was lush and immaculately clean. I commend the driver on his professionalism and would not hesitate to hire him again. This experience was BETTER THAN PERFECT!

— Cheryl FitzGerald, May 2026
