Private Car Charter in Japan: The Ultimate Guide (2026)

Quick AnswerA private car charter in Japan is a car and driver booked by the hour, minimum 8 hours, with the itinerary in your hands. RydAgent's charter rate is ¥7,000 per hour for a Toyota Alphard (up to 4 passengers, 4 large suitcases) or ¥8,000 per hour for a 9-seat Toyota HiAce inside Tokyo or Osaka city — ¥56,000 / ¥64,000 for a full 8-hour day — and ¥8,000 / ¥9,000 per hour everywhere else, including Kyoto and any day trip that leaves the city: ¥64,000 / ¥72,000 for 8 hours. Expressway tolls, parking, fuel and tax are inside the price, each hour includes 40 km of driving, and overtime costs the same hourly rate in 15-minute blocks. You're always in the loop — AI or a real person responds instantly, so you'll never be left at the airport wondering where your driver is while juggling luggage and family. What does a private car charter in Japan cost per hour?

It is 10:40 at a Hakone ropeway station, the queue is forty minutes long, your parents are tired, and the bus you planned to take to the lake leaves once an hour. That is the moment a charter pays for itself: the car is outside, the driver already knows the next stop, and the day runs on your clock rather than a timetable. What you are buying is time — a professional driver and a vehicle for a block of hours, with every road cost already inside the price.

RydAgent prices a charter by the hour with an 8-hour minimum. The rate depends on two things only: the vehicle and the zone.

Zone (set by where the car starts and ends)Toyota Alphard · up to 4 · per hourToyota HiAce · up to 9 · per hour8-hour day, Alphard / HiAce
Inside Tokyo Metropolis or Osaka City (pickup and drop-off both inside)¥7,000¥8,000¥56,000 / ¥64,000
Everywhere else — Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Hakone, Mt. Fuji, Nikko, Nagoya and the Shoryudo corridor, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Okinawa, and any day that leaves the city¥8,000¥9,000¥64,000 / ¥72,000

Each booked hour includes 40 km of driving, so 8 hours covers 320 km — enough for Tokyo to Hakone and back with stops. The zone is decided by the endpoints, not by where you spend the day: if either the pickup or the drop-off is outside the city, or they are in different cities, the whole charter is at the outside rate and the booking page will not offer the city rate. Airports count as their city (Haneda and Narita are Tokyo; Kansai and Itami are Osaka), Tokyo Disney Resort is in Chiba and therefore outside, and Kyoto has no city tier at all. The HiAce is always ¥1,000 an hour more than the Alphard: it is a 9-seat van carrying 9 large suitcases, and that is the whole reason to book it.

Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Hiroshima: what are the day-charter prices?

These are RydAgent's published day charters. Every price is the same hourly rate multiplied by the hours the itinerary needs — 8 hours for Hakone, Kamakura or Kyoto, 10 for Nikko, Nara, Takayama or Shirakawa-go, 12 for Mt. Fuji plus Hakone in one day. Each page has the timeline, what the stops cost, and the same comparison against the bus tour and the train.

What is included in the charter price, and what costs extra?

Included in every hourly rate: the driver, the vehicle, expressway and local tolls, parking at every stop, fuel, tax, and 40 km per hour. There is no toll bill at the end of a Tokyo–Hakone day, and the driver's meals while waiting are not your concern. The itinerary is yours to change on the day — add a stop, skip a temple, stay longer at lunch — as long as you are inside your hours and the distance allowance.

What costs extra, and only when you choose it:

  • Overtime. Same hourly rate, no premium, counted in 15-minute blocks; under 15 minutes is free. Book 8 hours and extend on the road rather than over-booking. Settlement is your choice: cash to the driver, a card link sent on the spot, or a link you pay once you are back at the hotel. Detail: extending a charter at the same rate.
  • Positioning for far pickups. The car has to drive from the nearest RydAgent base to your pickup and back from your drop-off. Half of that empty driving time, rounded down to the half hour, is added at the hourly rate and shown as its own line before you book. For a Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto city start it rounds to zero; for a Koyasan, Kinosaki or Matsumoto start it is real money, which the page shows rather than hides.
  • Overnight. Multi-day charters add ¥10,000 per night for the driver's accommodation.
  • Child seats. ¥2,000 per seat on a single-day charter — infant, child or booster, fitted before pickup. On multi-day charters child seats are free, however many you need.
  • Driver assistance. Hotel check-in translation, buying a Suica at the station counter, help at a self check-in machine: ¥3,000 per 30 minutes for an Alphard, ¥4,000 for a HiAce, 30-minute minimum, and it has to be booked in advance so the driver reserves the time. The driver cannot do immigration, security or anything that needs your passport in person.
  • A fluent-English driver. +20% on the fare, on request; refunded in full if one cannot be arranged.

Charter, taxi by the hour, tour bus or rail pass — which is cheaper for my group?

Honest numbers first, then the trade-off. All third-party prices below are from the operators' own pages, checked September 2026.

Toyota Rent a Car, self-drive, class C1 (Vitz / Passo / Roomy)¥10,340 per 24 h + fuel, tolls, parking¥5,170 + running costs¥2,585 + running costsNeeds a larger class; not this rateYou drive, navigate and park; an International Driving Permit is required
RydAgent private charter, Alphard, 8 h¥64,000 for the car¥32,000¥16,000Door to door from your hotel, your route and your order, tolls, parking and fuel inside, 4 large suitcases in the back
RydAgent private charter, HiAce, 8 h¥72,000 for the car¥18,000¥8,000Same, for 5–9 people with 9 large suitcases in one vehicle

The honest reading: for one or two people the coach tour or the Freepass is cheaper by a wide margin, and we say so. At four people the Alphard is ¥16,000 a head against ¥9,800 on the coach — roughly ¥6,200 more per person for a day that starts at your hotel door, follows your order, and never leaves anyone standing in a ropeway queue with a stroller. At nine people the HiAce is ¥8,000 a head, below the coach fare, and the alternative for a group that size is two taxis or two cars. A metered sightseeing taxi or a hire car from a Tokyo company is quoted per enquiry rather than published, so compare it on the day's total, not the headline hourly figure.

Which day trips work by charter from Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya and Hiroshima?

The pattern behind the published pages is simple: charter where the sights are spread out and the last bus is early. From Tokyo that is Hakone, the Fuji Five Lakes, Nikko, Kamakura with Enoshima, and the Gotemba outlets; from Kyoto and Osaka it is Nara, the Kyoto temple circuit, and Amanohashidate with the Ine boat houses; from Nagoya it is Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Ise; from Hiroshima it is Miyajima with the Peace Park. Inside Tokyo or Osaka a city day charter is for a layover, a family with small children, or parents who would rather not do subway stairs — for everyone else the subway is the right answer, and the Tokyo Private Day Tour by Car page says exactly that.

How real bookings use the day — where people actually stop, how long, and what a Fuji or Nikko day looks like in practice: Tokyo day trips by private charter, from our bookings. For a whole trip built around charter days, with the days that do not need a car left honest: an 8-day Japan itinerary with a private driver.

Can I extend, change the route, go one-way to another city, or keep the car for several days?

  • Extend on the day. Same rate, 15-minute blocks. Tell the driver; no re-booking.
  • Change the route. Free, within the booked hours and 40 km per hour. The driver will tell you if a detour would push you over either.
  • One-way between cities. A transfer-day charter: hotel to hotel with the sightseeing in between and the luggage in the car — Tokyo to Kawaguchiko, Kawaguchiko to Hakone, Kyoto to Osaka, Nagoya to Takayama. The far end adds the positioning charge described above. How it works and when it beats a train plus a transfer: transfer-day charters, hotel to hotel.
  • Several days. ¥10,000 per night for the driver, child seats free, and for multi-day customers RydAgent can buy shinkansen tickets on your behalf and post them to you — ask when you book.

Is the driver a guide? Do I need a licensed guide?

The driver is a professional driver, not a tour guide, and it is worth being precise about what that means in Japan. Carrying paying passengers legally requires a Type-2 driver's licence and a green-plate commercial vehicle; a white-plate rental van with a paid driver is illegal "shiro-taku", and the passengers sit outside commercial insurance. RydAgent's dispatch network runs green-plate vehicles with Type-2 licensed drivers — the full check, including why the plate alone is no longer enough since the 2026 arrests over rented plates, is here: Is your Japan tour driver legal?

Language: booking and support are in English throughout. Drivers have basic English and use a translation app; a fluent-English driver can be requested for +20% on the fare and the surcharge is refunded in full if one cannot be arranged. Many drivers in the network speak Chinese, so a Chinese-speaking driver can usually be arranged at no charge if you ask when booking. If you want a licensed guide-interpreter for the day, that is a separate service on top of the car; for most families the driver plus a good phone is the practical setup.

How do I book a private charter in Japan?

  1. Enter the day — pickup, date, hours (8 minimum), passengers and, if it is one-way, the drop-off. The hourly price, the zone and any positioning charge appear instantly. No account, no login.
  2. Pick the vehicle — Alphard for up to 4, HiAce for 5–9 — and add child seats if you need them.
  3. Confirm with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay; charters more than 48 hours away can be reserved with the card saved but not charged, and are charged 48 hours before the start. Cancellation is free with a full refund until 24 hours before.
  4. Book by 20:00 Japan time the day before for a next-day charter; after that the site offers the day after next, and anything sooner goes through WhatsApp so a person can check.

On the day the driver meets you at the hotel or any address, and the day is yours. Driver no-show on a charter: double your money back.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private charter or the Hakone Freepass better for a Hakone day trip with 4 people?

On price, the Freepass: the Odakyu Hakone Freepass is ¥7,100 per adult for 2 days from Shinjuku (¥28,400 for four), against RydAgent's ¥64,000 for an 8-hour Alphard charter from Tokyo — ¥16,000 a head, tolls, parking and fuel included. The charter wins on the day itself: door to door from your hotel, Owakudani, Lake Ashi and an onsen in whatever order you like, no ropeway or bus queues, and the luggage stays in the car. With one or two people the Freepass is the sensible choice; with four and a child or two, most families choose the car for the time it gives back.

How much does it cost to charter a car with a driver in Japan?

RydAgent charges ¥7,000 per hour for a Toyota Alphard (up to 4) or ¥8,000 per hour for a 9-seat HiAce inside Tokyo or Osaka city, and ¥8,000 / ¥9,000 per hour everywhere else including Kyoto — minimum 8 hours, so a full day is ¥56,000–¥72,000 depending on zone and vehicle. Tolls, parking, fuel and tax are included; each hour includes 40 km. The price is per vehicle, not per person.

Why did the booking page lock my charter to the outside-city rate?

Because the zone is set by where the car starts and ends, not by where you spend the day. If either the pickup or the drop-off is outside Tokyo Metropolis or Osaka City — or the two are in different cities — the whole day is charged at ¥8,000 / ¥9,000 per hour. Airports count as their city (Haneda and Narita as Tokyo, Kansai and Itami as Osaka); Tokyo Disney Resort is in Chiba, so it is outside. Kyoto has no city rate: it is ¥8,000 / ¥9,000 per hour everywhere.

What happens if we run over the booked hours?

You pay the same hourly rate for the extra time, in 15-minute blocks, with no premium — under 15 minutes is free. So book 8 hours and extend on the road if the day is going well; there is no reason to over-book upfront. Settle the extra time however you prefer: cash to the driver, a card link sent on the spot, or a link paid after you are back at the hotel.

Can we do a one-way day between two cities, or keep the car for several days?

Yes to both. A transfer-day charter starts at one hotel and ends at another — Tokyo to Kawaguchiko, Kawaguchiko to Hakone, Kyoto to Osaka, Nagoya to Takayama — with sightseeing on the way and the luggage in the car; the far end adds a positioning charge (half the driver's empty driving time, rounded down to the half hour, shown before you book). Multi-day charters add ¥10,000 per night for the driver's accommodation, and on multi-day charters child seats are free.

Is the driver a licensed guide? Does the driver speak English?

The driver is a professional driver, not a guide: Type-2 licensed, in a green-plate commercial vehicle, which is what Japanese law requires to carry paying passengers. Booking and support are in English; drivers have basic English and use a translation app, and a fluent-English driver can be requested for +20% on the fare, refunded in full if one cannot be arranged. Many drivers in the network speak Chinese, so a Chinese-speaking driver can usually be arranged at no charge — ask when you book.

Are tolls, parking and fuel included, and what is not?

Included: expressway tolls, parking at every stop, fuel, tax and 40 km per booked hour. Not included, and only if you choose them: overtime at the same hourly rate in 15-minute blocks; a positioning charge when the pickup or drop-off is far from the nearest RydAgent base (zero for city days); ¥10,000 per night on multi-day charters; child seats at ¥2,000 each on single-day charters (free on multi-day); driver assistance such as hotel check-in or IC-card help at ¥3,000 per 30 minutes for an Alphard, booked in advance.

How far ahead do I need to book, and can I cancel?

Book by 20:00 Japan time the day before for a next-day charter; after 20:00 the website offers the day after next, and for anything sooner you message us on WhatsApp so a person can check availability. Cancellation is free with a full refund until 24 hours before the start; inside 24 hours the charter is not refunded. Charters more than 48 hours away can be reserved with your card saved but not charged, and the fare is charged 48 hours before the start.

This was such an easy stress free experience. I have taken many airport transfers and this was by far the easiest and most efficient experience I have ever had. The communication was frequent and proactive. I cannot say enough about this company. 100% recommend

Loved their service, they accommodated us even if we had last minute chnages. It was a great experience!!!

The driver contacted us as soon as we landed in Tokyo. He provided clear instructions how to meet after we got our luggage. He had to wait an extra 30 mins since our plane was delayed. Great service, great / clean car and a nice ride to our hotel. Thanks.

Henry Avetisyan, Jul 2026

My wife and I had a flawless experience using this transfer service from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Central Tokyo. Although we are in our 70s, we are experienced travelers and usually take public transit or a taxi from airports to hotels. However, this was our first trip to Asia and with a 12-hour flight from Chicago, we decided that we needed to make the hotel transfer easy. And it was. Communication with the company was excellent. They messaged me through WhatsApp several times to make everything was clear. In fact, I messaged them when we landed, that the plane was an hour early and hoped they could pick us up sooner. They responded yes and sure enough our driver,John, was there to meet us past customs. John was very friendly and very professional. His English was excellent. He handled the luggage. The vehicle was comfortable. He made us feel welcome. I highly recommend them and would use them again without hesitation.

S Lund, May 2026

Great experience with this taxi service from the customer service to the driver and the car everything works like a clock

Michael Bakov, Jul 2026

Our driver picked us up at our hotel and dropped us at Haneda Airport Departures (Terminal 3) as requested. It was a very comfortable and safe ride and the vehicle was very clean and spacious. Thank you so much!

Valerie Pendon, Jun 2026

Great experience using this private transfer from our hotel to Haneda Airport. Booking was easy, and when we needed to adjust our pickup time, the operator was very responsive. The driver arrived on time and the ride was smooth and stress-free. Would definitely use again.

Karen Kiefer-Fujimoto, Jun 2026

Professional service that takes the stress out of airport transfers. Our family has been to Tokyo a few times. Airport transfer by train, taxi, and private car. This service is good value, especially for groups. We had a very comfortable and well kept vehicle. Driver was very professional, polite, and easy to work with. We had an hour long flight delay and sat on the runway for 20 minutes after landing. This service was very flexible and helpful through the situation. Driver was patiently waiting when we arrived.

Mark OBrien, Jun 2026

Karazawa Ryou was our driver. He texted us his contact info via Whatsap the day before our flight. In between flights, we learned that our connecting flight had been delayed. Instead of arriving at 9:15pm, we would now be arriving at I1:30pm. Such a significant amount of delay time...plus, arriving so much LATER at night, I was worried that our driver would no longer be able to pick us up. I notified him, and he responded, "Don't worry. I'll wait for you. See you later." He even included a smiley face! I went from panic to peace in an instant. As we were exiting the plane, I received a text from him notifying me that we had landed at Terminal 2, so it would be quicker to get out. I should let him know once we had picked up our luggage, and he would be at the exit within one minute with a sign. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly this process went, and the SUV exceeded my expectations. It was lush and immaculately clean. I commend the driver on his professionalism and would not hesitate to hire him again. This experience was BETTER THAN PERFECT!

Cheryl FitzGerald, May 2026

Very nice transfer service. Very helpful and most pleasant experience. Would use them again.

William Thornton BC Guide Dogs, May 2026

Excellent experience from start to finish. Communication before arrival was clear and professional, and the driver was waiting exactly as instructed after we cleared customs at Haneda Airport. After a long international flight, having a smooth private transfer to our hotel made a huge difference. The vehicle was clean and comfortable, the ride was efficient, and the entire process felt very organized and stress-free. We especially appreciated the prompt responses and easy coordination through WhatsApp. Highly recommend KJ Tour for anyone arriving in Tokyo and wanting a reliable, comfortable airport transfer experience.
