KIX & Itami to Nara or Kobe: Is a ¥22,000 Flat Taxi Best?
Short answer: travelling light, take the bus or the boat. Going to Kobe from Kansai Airport with three or four people and suitcases, take a fixed private car at ¥23,000, which undercuts MK's flat fare once the tolls and ¥1,000 airport parking are added. Going anywhere from Itami with a small party, take MK. Arriving after 22:00, take us, because nobody else holds the price.
Our companion article already covers the Kansai flat-fare taxis to Kyoto and Osaka, including MK's fare bands, the expressway rule and the late-night cliff. This one is the missing half: Nara and Kobe, and they are not simply two more rows on that table. Nara has no airport express and the one direct bus stops at the wrong station for most of the temples. Kobe has an option almost no English guide mentions, a high-speed boat across Osaka Bay that is cheaper than the airport bus and lands you in the city on a ticket already in your hand. For the Kyoto and Osaka numbers, see KIX and Itami fixed-fare taxis to Kyoto and Osaka; this article does not repeat that table.
Every competitor figure below comes from the operator's own published page, fetched on 5 September 2026. Where we could not find a published number, we say so rather than estimating.

Which Is Actually Best: Flat-Fare Taxi, Bus, Boat or Private Car?
It depends on the airport far more than the destination, and the ranking flips between the two. From Kansai Airport every car option costs over ¥20,000, so the gaps are small and the extras decide it. From Itami, Kobe is barely 35 km and Nara about 49 km, so a flat fare is genuinely cheap and no private-car price matches it. For one or two people at either airport, the bus or the boat wins by a margin not worth arguing about. Below, "all in" means the flat fare plus the tolls MK publishes plus the airport parking MK charges on a pickup, at a daytime rate.
| Route, up to 4 people with bags | MK flat fare, all in by day | RydAgent Alphard, all in | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kansai Airport to central Kobe (Chuo-ku east of Tor Road) | ¥25,050 standard, ¥27,050 high-grade | ¥23,000 | Us, by ¥2,050 against their standard car |
| Kansai Airport to Nara City east of Route 24 | ¥25,300 standard plus an unpublished toll; ¥27,300 high-grade plus toll | ¥30,000 | MK, by ¥4,700 on fare and parking, less the toll |
| Itami to central Kobe | ¥13,400 standard, ¥15,400 high-grade | ¥24,000 | MK, by ¥10,600. Take MK |
| Itami to Nara City east of Route 24 | ¥15,500 standard plus an unpublished toll | ¥24,000 | MK, by roughly ¥8,000. Take MK |
Two of those four rows go to the taxi company and one goes to it by more than ¥10,000. That is not a rhetorical concession, it is the arithmetic: if your trip is Itami to Sannomiya with two people and two cases, close this page and call MK. What the table does not show is where the comparison changes shape, which is the hour of the day, the number of seats, and what happens when your flight is two hours late.
What MK Actually Charges to Nara and to Kobe
MK prices by zone, one way, per vehicle, in three tiers. Everything below is from MK's own airport fixed-fare page, fetched on 5 September 2026, which states that the fares were revised on 27 November 2025, that the information is current as of 20 March 2026, and that the printed fares already include MK's ¥300 dispatch fee but not the expressway tolls. The tiers are MK's own: a standard car, a saloon or small people carrier; a high-grade tier, where a Toyota Alphard hybrid sits and so the closest like-for-like with ours; and a jumbo, a nine-seat Toyota HiAce. Comparing our Alphard against their standard saloon would not be fair, so both are shown.
From Kansai Airport
| MK zone | What is in it | Standard | High-grade | Jumbo (9 seats) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nara B | Nara City east of Route 24: Nara Park, Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, the Nara Hotel | ¥24,300 | ¥26,300 | ¥32,300 |
| Nara A | Nara City west of Route 24, and Ikoma City | ¥21,800 | ¥23,800 | ¥29,800 |
| Nara C | Yamatokoriyama, Ikaruga (for Horyu-ji), Sango, Ando, Heguri | ¥20,900 | ¥22,900 | ¥28,900 |
| Nara D | Tenri | ¥23,000 | ¥25,000 | ¥31,000 |
| Nara H, Nara I | Sakurai; and Asuka, Gose, Takatori, Oyodo | ¥22,300; ¥19,800 | ¥24,300; ¥21,800 | ¥30,300; ¥27,800 |
| Kobe, Chuo-ku east | East of Tor Road: Sannomiya, Kitano, the main hotel cluster | ¥22,000 | ¥24,000 | ¥30,000 |
| Kobe, Chuo-ku west and Port Island | West of Tor Road; Port Island | ¥23,000; ¥23,200 | ¥25,000; ¥25,200 | ¥31,000; ¥31,200 |
| Kobe, Higashinada south and Nada | South of the Hankyu Kobe Line; Nada-ku off the mountains | ¥19,800; ¥21,100 | ¥21,800; ¥23,100 | ¥27,800; ¥29,100 |
| Kobe Airport | The airport itself | ¥24,900 | ¥26,900 | ¥32,900 |
| Kita-ku north | Includes Arima Onsen | ¥28,600 | ¥30,600 | ¥36,600 |
From Itami
| MK zone | Standard | High-grade | Jumbo (9 seats) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nara B (Nara City east of Route 24) | ¥15,200 | ¥17,200 | ¥23,200 |
| Nara A (Nara City west of Route 24, Ikoma) | ¥12,200 | ¥14,200 | ¥20,200 |
| Nara C (Yamatokoriyama, Ikaruga) | ¥13,000 | ¥15,000 | ¥21,000 |
| Nara D (Tenri) | ¥18,800 | ¥20,800 | ¥26,800 |
| Kobe, Chuo-ku east (Sannomiya, Kitano) | ¥11,500 | ¥13,500 | ¥19,500 |
| Kobe, Chuo-ku west; Higashinada south | ¥12,500; ¥9,000 | ¥14,500; ¥11,000 | ¥20,500; ¥17,000 |
| Kobe Airport | ¥14,200 | ¥16,200 | ¥22,200 |
Three things worth pulling out. Route 24 costs you ¥2,500: MK splits Nara City at that road, and the eastern half, where almost every visitor stays, is ¥2,500 dearer from Kansai Airport than the western half. Our price does not vary within Nara, which cuts both ways. Ikaruga is the cheapest interesting zone: Horyu-ji sits there and MK prices it at ¥20,900 standard from Kansai Airport, below every Nara City zone. And Itami to Kobe is a different order of magnitude: ¥9,000 to southern Higashinada and ¥11,500 to Sannomiya are numbers no pre-booked private transfer is going to beat.
The Extras That Sit Outside the Flat Fare
A flat fare in Japan means the fare is flat, not that the price is final. MK is straightforward about it on its own notes page and every item below is quoted from there. None of it is hidden; it is simply not in the number you first see.
| Item | What MK publishes | What it does to the Nara or Kobe run |
|---|---|---|
| Expressway tolls | Not included. MK uses toll roads as a rule and you cannot specify the route | Guide figures: about ¥2,050 for Kobe to Kansai Airport, about ¥1,600 for Kobe to Itami. No guide figure is published for the Nara run, so we have not printed one |
| Airport parking on a pickup | ¥1,000 at Kansai Airport, ¥300 at Itami | Added to every arrival transfer |
| Late night and early morning | 22:00 to 05:00 is a 20 per cent surcharge | Kansai Airport to Sannomiya goes from ¥22,000 to ¥26,400 on the standard car, before tolls and parking |
| Time-specified booking | ¥500 extra on standard cars | Applies if you name a pickup time |
| Meeting you inside Itami arrivals | Meet service ¥1,000, introduced 1 February 2025 | Without it, MK asks you to walk to the reserved-taxi rank yourself |
| Stops on the way | Not possible. MK states the service is direct between one address and the airport | No dropping a bag at the hotel before Nara Park |
| Stops on the way, with us | Can be arranged as a chosen extra, quoted before you book rather than added afterwards | Dropping bags at a Nara hotel before Nara Park, or a lunch stop on the way from Kansai Airport, is a request rather than a refusal |
| Second vehicle if the bags do not fit | Dispatched, but charged on the meter, not at the flat fare | The one place the flat fare stops being flat |
Two rules from the same pages shape the arrival rather than the price. First, the Kansai Airport pickup window: MK asks you to specify a pickup no earlier than 40 minutes after your flight's arrival time for an international flight, or 20 minutes for a domestic one, because of the airport's taxi lane entry restriction. Ask for earlier and the car cannot enter the reserved lane, so you wait anyway. That is how the airport works and MK is honest to publish it, but the clock starts on their terms.
Second, what happens when you are late. MK states that a heavily delayed flight may see the booking automatically cancelled, and that if the driver cannot reach you after arrival it may be treated as cancelled after about 30 minutes. An airport-departing booking is free to cancel until 150 minutes before at Kansai Airport and 90 minutes before at Itami or Kobe Airport; after that it is 100 per cent of the flat fare plus round-trip tolls and airport parking. Those windows are reasonable for a company that has sent a car 50 km to fetch you. They are a different promise from ours, and the difference matters most on exactly the flights that go wrong.
Who Actually Publishes a Flat Fare to Nara and Kobe, and Who Does Not
We looked for every operator publishing a Kansai Airport or Itami flat fare to these two cities. The field is thinner than you would expect: MK is the only one whose complete published zone table we could verify.
- MK. Full zone tables for Kansai Airport, Itami and Kobe Airport, covering Nara, Kobe, Kyoto, Shiga, Osaka and Wakayama, with vehicle tiers, cancellation terms and luggage capacities all published. Whatever else you conclude, they are the transparent one.
- Nara Kotsu. Runs the Nara airport limousine buses jointly with Kansai Airport Transportation and Hankyu Kanko Bus, but publishes no airport taxi flat fare. Its taxi interest is a local Uda-area operator, not an airport service.
- Hankyu Taxi. Its own fares page links to a fixed-fare service from the Kobe and Hanshin area to Kobe Airport, but that page returned a 404 when we checked on 5 September 2026. What it does publish is the meter: in Hyogo, ¥700 for the first 1.3 km then ¥100 per 225 m, a nine-seat jumbo at ¥730 then ¥100 per 177 m, a 20 per cent surcharge from 22:00 to 05:00, a ¥500 advance-booking fee before 08:59, and a long-distance discount of 10 per cent off the fare above ¥9,000. That last one is useful and almost never mentioned.
- Kintetsu Taxi. The company at kintetsu-taxi.co.jp is Nagoya Kintetsu Taxi and publishes no Kansai Airport flat fare. We found no Nara-area Kintetsu taxi site publishing one.
- Nihon Kotsu. Its published operation is Tokyo-based; we found no Kansai airport flat-fare table.
One more note in the interest of not making things up. Kansai Airport's own website returns HTTP 403 to automated requests, confirmed on 5 September 2026 on both the English taxi access page and the site root, so we cannot verify taxi rank numbers, floors or counter locations from the authoritative source and this article states none. Check the airport's signage or its site in a normal browser on the day.
Nara Is a Bus Problem, Not a Train Problem
The most useful thing to know about reaching Nara from either airport is that there is no airport express. Kyoto has the Haruka; Nara has nothing equivalent. Every rail itinerary from Kansai Airport needs at least one change, usually at Tennoji or Osaka, and the door-to-door figures our route pages carry, measured through NAVITIME, are roughly 2 hours and ¥1,700 to ¥2,400 per person from Kansai Airport, and about 2 to 2.5 hours with two changes and ¥1,000 to ¥1,200 from Itami, which has no station of its own. So the real competitor is the limousine bus, and it is a good one.
| Nara limousine bus | From Kansai Airport | From Itami |
|---|---|---|
| Adult one way | ¥2,400 | ¥1,750 to JR Nara or Yamato-Saidaiji |
| Child one way | ¥1,200 | ¥880 |
| Return and day return | ¥4,500 (14 days) and ¥3,000 | No return ticket; a phone multi-ride book instead, 6 rides ¥9,980 or 11 rides ¥17,500 |
| Other stops | Ikoma and Tenri (Ichinomoto) both ¥2,400 | Ikoma ¥1,400, Tenri ¥2,050 |
| Journey time | About 1 hr 43 min to JR Nara, or about 1 hr 25 min on services skipping Yamato-Saidaiji | About 1 hr 17 min to JR Nara |
| Departures a day | 11 | 10 |
| First and last from the airport | 07:45 and 21:45 from Terminal 1; last arrival JR Nara 23:25 | 09:00 and 21:00; last arrival JR Nara 22:17 |
| Reservations and operators | Airport-bound only; board airport-departing services if there is a seat. Nara Kotsu with Kansai Airport Transportation | Same rule. Nara Kotsu with Hankyu Kanko Bus |
Three specifics in that table decide whether the bus works for your trip, and none of them appears in most guides.
The bus does not stop at Kintetsu Nara Station on the way in. On Kansai Airport Transportation's own timetable, every one of the 11 inbound services shows a straight-through mark against Kintetsu Nara, the Nara Hotel and Tenri; all of them terminate at JR Nara Station east exit. Those three stops exist only in the airport-bound direction, and only on a single departure a day, the 17:40 from JR Nara. Kintetsu Nara is the station nearer Nara Park and the Todai-ji approach, so arriving by bus usually means one more leg on foot, by local bus or by taxi, with the bags you have carried since your home airport. Nara Kotsu also notes that from 1 October 2026 the 22:25 and 23:25 arrivals at JR Nara move to bay 4 rather than the usual bay 10.
There is a three-hour hole in the middle of the day from Kansai Airport. The Terminal 1 departures are 07:45, 08:45, 09:45, 10:45, then nothing until 13:45, then 14:45, 15:45, 17:45, 19:45, 20:45 and 21:45. A flight landing at 11:00 that clears immigration at 12:15 has just missed the morning cluster and waits until 13:45.
Nothing runs before 07:45 from Kansai Airport or 09:00 from Itami. The Itami first departure is the harsher of the two: land at 08:00 on a domestic connection and the direct bus to Nara is an hour away, with rail meaning two changes and over two hours.
Set against that, the bus is comfortable and cheap: four-across seating with a toilet and free Wi-Fi, and contactless card payment on board from March 2026. For a solo traveller or a couple with cabin bags, ¥2,400 or ¥1,750 is the right answer and we would rather say so. Full three-way comparisons: KIX to Nara and Itami to Nara.
The Kobe Bay Shuttle: the Option Most English Guides Leave Out
A high-speed boat crosses Osaka Bay between Kansai Airport and Kobe Airport in 31 minutes, by a wide margin the most direct line on the map between the two. Almost every English arrival guide omits it or gives it a sentence without numbers. Here is the whole thing from the operator's own pages.
| Kobe Bay Shuttle | Published detail |
|---|---|
| One-way fare | Adult ¥1,880 (age 12 and over), child ¥940 |
| Port Liner set ticket | Adult ¥1,880, child ¥940, sold at the Kansai Airport ticket counter or the Port Liner Sannomiya station information desk (cash only at Sannomiya); not sold at the Kobe counter |
| Return and day return | Adult ¥3,060 (valid 120 days) and ¥2,510; children ¥1,530 and ¥1,260 |
| Accessible fare | ¥950 adult, ¥480 child, with a disability certificate shown on the day; one carer at the same fare |
| Crossing time | 31 minutes. The 12:00 and 16:30 sailings from Kansai Airport take 36 minutes |
| Sailings | 16 a day in each direction |
| First and last from Kansai Airport | Pier departure 06:30 (bus from Terminal 1 at 06:20) to 00:00, arriving Kobe 00:31 |
| First and last from Kobe | Pier departure 05:30 to 22:45, reaching Terminal 1 at about 23:25 and Terminal 2 at about 23:35 |
| Connections | At Kansai Airport, Terminal 1 ground floor stand 12 or a direct bus from Terminal 2, and the operator states the bus fare is inside the boat fare. At Kobe, the terminal to the pier is a 5 to 6 minute walk or a free bus |
| Port Liner to Sannomiya | ¥340 adult, ¥170 child (Kobe New Transit's own fare table) |
| Luggage | Up to 2 m total across the three dimensions and 30 kg. Surfboards to 277 cm total. Bicycles only dismantled or folded and fully inside a carrying bag |
| Boarding | Reservation-based. Arrive 20 minutes before departure; boarding starts 5 minutes before; the boat departs on time and will not wait |
Read the second row again, because it is the buried headline. The Port Liner set ticket costs ¥1,880, exactly the same as the plain one-way boat fare, and carries you on into Sannomiya. That makes the whole journey from Kansai Airport into central Kobe ¥1,880 against ¥2,200 for the limousine bus, and it is the cheapest published way into the city without a rail change. The catch is where you buy it: the Kansai Airport ticket counter or the Port Liner desk at Sannomiya, not the Kobe pier counter.
Now the honest limits, because this is a boat and boats have weather.
It gets cancelled, and the operator tells you how. Sailings are cancelled on wind speed or wave height, with the decision normally made around 14:00 the day before and booked passengers contacted in advance. If a low-pressure system cancels the sailing, a replacement bus runs on the same schedule and takes about 90 minutes instead of 31, which is worse than the limousine bus. And there is one flat exception worth writing on your hand: in a typhoon, no replacement bus runs at all. If a typhoon is forecast for your arrival day, the Bay Shuttle is not a plan.
The last sailing lands you somewhere with no train. The final boat leaves the Kansai Airport pier at 00:00 and reaches Kobe at 00:31, and the operator's own footnote states that this arrival has no Port Liner connection, as does the 05:30 first departure from Kobe. So the last boat gets you across the bay and leaves you at Kobe Airport at half past midnight with the trains finished. Unless someone is meeting you, the last useful sailing is earlier than the timetable's last line suggests.
Missing it costs the whole fare, unless your airline writes it down. Past one hour before your booked departure the fare is charged in full; before that a change is free and a refund costs ¥220. The exception is specific: if a flight delay makes you miss the last sailing, the operator refunds you on production of the airline's delay certificate, printed rather than on a screen.
The luggage rule is real. Two metres total across the three dimensions and 30 kg per item is generous for normal suitcases and restrictive for skis, golf travel cases and larger pushchairs. Check your case, not your memory. And the English section of the operator's site carries neither the fares nor the timetable, which live on the Japanese pages only. That is probably why the boat is missing from so many English guides.
Kobe by Bus and by Rail
The limousine bus is the default and it is very good. Kansai Airport Transportation, Hanshin Bus and Hankyu Kanko Bus run the Kansai Airport service jointly at ¥2,200 adult, ¥1,100 child, about 1 hour 5 minutes direct to Sannomiya, or about 1 hour 15 minutes via Rokko Island; a return is ¥3,700 valid 30 days and a day return ¥3,200. From Itami, Hankyu Kanko Bus and Hanshin Bus run to Sannomiya for ¥1,200 adult, ¥600 child, about 40 minutes, 26 departures a day, no reservation system, first 07:50 and last 21:15.
The most useful timetable fact for Kobe is the late one. The last Kansai Airport bus to Sannomiya leaves Terminal 2 at 22:47 and Terminal 1 at 23:00, arriving at 00:05. That is a good deal later than the Kyoto bus, which stops around 22:00, so Kobe-bound arrivals have more room after a delayed landing. The first is 06:20 from Terminal 1, reaching Sannomiya at 07:25. Kansai Airport Transportation revised this timetable on 1 September 2026, so check the day you fly rather than trusting a screenshot.
Rail to Kobe is the awkward one, because no railway crosses Osaka Bay. Every train from Kansai Airport loops around it through Osaka, typically the Haruka or the Kansai Airport Rapid and then a JR Kobe Line rapid, which our route pages measure at ¥1,700 to ¥2,900 per person and roughly 1.5 to 2 hours door to door with up to two changes. From Itami, where there is no station, rail means a connecting leg first, and NAVITIME's measured plans come out at about 72 minutes via JR at ¥490 or about 93 minutes via Hankyu at ¥290. Those Itami fares are absurdly cheap and, for one person with a rucksack, the right answer. Detail in KIX to Kobe compared and Itami to Kobe compared.
Per-Person Arithmetic, Because That Is the Real Comparison
A private car is priced per vehicle and everything else per head, so the comparison changes shape with the party. Cost per person, from Kansai Airport, by day.
| Option | 2 people | 4 people | 6 people | 9 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| To Kobe: Bay Shuttle, Port Liner set ticket ¥1,880 each | ¥1,880 | ¥1,880 | ¥1,880 | ¥1,880 |
| To Kobe: limousine bus ¥2,200 each | ¥2,200 | ¥2,200 | ¥2,200 | ¥2,200 |
| To Kobe: MK standard flat fare, ¥25,050 all in | ¥12,525 | ¥6,263 | Standard tier does not seat 6 or 9 | |
| To Kobe: MK jumbo, ¥33,050 all in | ¥16,525 | ¥8,263 | ¥5,508 | ¥3,672 |
| To Kobe: RydAgent Alphard ¥23,000 / HiAce ¥28,000 | ¥11,500 | ¥5,750 | ¥4,667 | ¥3,111 |
| To Nara: limousine bus ¥2,400 each | ¥2,400 | ¥2,400 | ¥2,400 | ¥2,400 |
| To Nara: MK standard flat fare, from ¥25,300 all in | from ¥12,650 | from ¥6,325 | Standard tier does not seat 6 or 9 | |
| To Nara: MK jumbo, from ¥33,300 all in | from ¥16,650 | from ¥8,325 | from ¥5,550 | from ¥3,700 |
| To Nara: RydAgent Alphard ¥30,000 / HiAce ¥34,000 | ¥15,000 | ¥7,500 | ¥5,667 | ¥3,778 |
Two conclusions fall out. On fare alone the bus and the boat win at every group size, including nine people. Nine bus tickets to Nara are ¥21,600 against our ¥34,000, and nine Bay Shuttle set tickets to Sannomiya are ¥16,920 against our ¥28,000. There is no party size at which a private car becomes the cheap option against public transport here, and we are not going to build a table that pretends there is. The comparison a private car wins is against the other car: four people to Kobe are ¥5,750 a head with us against MK's ¥6,263, nine are ¥3,111 against ¥3,672, and after 22:00 their numbers rise by a fifth while ours do not. To Nara by day, MK's are the better ones.
What We Charge, and Exactly Where We Lose
Fixed, per vehicle, all-inclusive, and the same at 03:00 as at 15:00. These four pairs are engine-verified from our own booking system.
| Route | Toyota Alphard (up to 4 passengers, 4 large bags plus 4 carry-ons) | Toyota HiAce (up to 9 passengers, 9 large bags plus 9 carry-ons) |
|---|---|---|
| Kansai Airport to Nara | ¥30,000 | ¥34,000 |
| Kansai Airport to Kobe, including the Kobe Port Terminal | ¥23,000 | ¥28,000 |
| Itami to Nara | ¥24,000 | ¥26,000 |
| Itami to Kobe | ¥24,000 | ¥26,000 |
| Anything else, including Arima Onsen, Himeji, Ikaruga or a specific Nara ryokan | Not in our fixed table. Put the exact addresses into the booking form and it prices the drive from them. We are not going to print a figure we have not verified | |
And here is the losing column, stated plainly rather than buried.
- Itami to Kobe: MK wins by about ¥10,600 on the standard car and about ¥8,600 on the like-for-like wagon, and even with the 22:00 surcharge their standard car is around ¥15,700 all in against our ¥24,000. If your party fits in a saloon, book MK.
- Itami to Nara: MK wins by roughly ¥8,000 on the standard car. Same advice.
- Kansai Airport to Nara by day: MK's standard car wins by ¥4,700 on the fare plus parking, less whatever the unpublished toll turns out to be, and its high-grade tier is still ¥2,700 under our ¥30,000 on the same basis.
- Any of these routes with one or two people: the bus, the boat or the train wins, usually by an order of magnitude. ¥1,880 into Kobe is not a number a private car argues with.
Where we win is narrow, and worth being equally precise about.
- Kansai Airport to Kobe, any party size. ¥23,000 against MK's ¥25,050 all in on the standard car and ¥27,050 on the like-for-like tier, and ¥28,000 against ¥33,050 for the nine-seater.
- Anything after 22:00 or before 05:00. MK adds 20 per cent, the Nara bus has finished at 21:45, the last Kobe bus is 23:00 and the last useful Bay Shuttle is earlier than its last sailing. Our price is the same at every hour and there is no late booking fee. See landing at Kansai Airport after midnight.
- Nine seats without an advance jumbo reservation. MK's capacity grid says nine passengers with nine cases is a jumbo-only combination, and a jumbo must be booked ahead. One HiAce at ¥28,000 to Kobe or ¥34,000 to Nara keeps a group of six to nine together; see 9-seat HiAce group transfers in Kansai.
- Four people with four large cases. MK publishes a capacity of two 90 L suitcases for its Alphard hybrid and marks four people with four cases as impossible in a saloon. Our published Alphard capacity is 4 large bags plus 4 carry-ons. Both are published figures rather than promises, and we cannot promise a specific load fits without seeing it, but that gap is where a lot of families end up choosing.
- Child seats at all. MK states clearly that its taxis cannot provide them. On a 75-minute motorway run to Nara that is not a small thing.
- The toll being inside the number, and 90 minutes of free waiting from actual landing. MK bills tolls separately and publishes no figure for Nara, so the total you pay is not the total you were quoted. And our free waiting runs from when the wheels touch down rather than from a booked time, with delays over 20 minutes adjusting the pickup automatically. That is the answer to the 40-minute lane rule and the 30-minute contact rule a taxi company reasonably needs: with a car booked, an hour at the baggage belt is not a crisis.
Go With the Bus, the Boat, the Flat-Fare Taxi or a Private Car?
- Go with the Bay Shuttle if you are one, two or three people heading into Kobe from Kansai Airport in daylight with normal suitcases. The Port Liner set ticket at ¥1,880 is the cheapest published way into Sannomiya, the crossing is 31 minutes, and the connecting bus at the airport end is already in the fare. Check the forecast the afternoon before, because that is when the operator decides.
- Go with the limousine bus if you want one seat, no changes and no weather risk. Kobe is ¥2,200 and about 1 hour 5 minutes, last departure 23:00 from Terminal 1. Nara is ¥2,400 and about 1 hour 43 minutes, or ¥1,750 and about 1 hour 17 minutes from Itami. Bags go in the hold.
- Go with MK's flat fare if you are travelling from Itami with up to three people and two suitcases. ¥11,500 to Sannomiya and ¥15,200 to eastern Nara City are prices we cannot match. Add the toll and the ¥300 parking and it is still the cheapest car on the road.
- Go with MK's flat fare if you are going to Nara from Kansai Airport by day in a party of two or three and are content with a saloon. ¥24,300 plus parking and toll beats our ¥30,000, and MK publishes its zones clearly enough that you can check which side of Route 24 your hotel is on first.
- Go with a fixed private car if your destination is Kobe and your party is three or more. ¥23,000 all in undercuts MK's standard flat fare once the ¥2,050 toll and ¥1,000 parking are counted, and at nine people the gap against their jumbo is about ¥5,000.
- Go with a fixed private car if you land after 22:00 or leave before 05:00. Every taxi option adds a fifth, the Nara bus has finished, and the last Bay Shuttle drops you at an airport with no train.
- Go with a fixed private car if you are four people with four large cases, or six to nine people at all, or travelling with a toddler who needs a child seat, or heading to a Nara ryokan rather than to a station. Those are the four constraints families actually run into.
- Take one of each if the budget is tight but the arrival is awkward. Ride the bus or the boat inbound in daylight, and book the car for the pre-dawn departure to catch a morning flight, the direction where public transport is thinnest and the taxi surcharge highest.
- Do not build a plan around the Bay Shuttle in a typhoon. The operator states it runs no replacement bus at all in that case. Book the limousine bus or a car and lose the 31-minute crossing.
What the Price Includes
Your price is all-inclusive: tolls, parking, fuel, taxes, and meet & greet with a name board at pickup. Free waiting is included — 90 minutes from actual landing on airport pickups, 30 minutes on other rides. Tipping is never expected — never required. The only extras are ones you choose.
Name-board meet and greet is included as standard on bookings made directly with us. Airport conditions can occasionally prevent it, in which case the driver switches to live GPS, a video call or a phone call. On a ride that does not start at an airport, such as a Kobe hotel to Kansai Airport or Nara to Kyoto, there is no name board; the driver contacts you beforehand and sends a photo of the vehicle and its exact position, and free waiting on those rides is 30 minutes from the booked time rather than 90.
An airport pickup can be booked as little as 2 hours before you land, and booking that late costs nothing extra: no rush fee, no night loading, the same fixed price as booking months ahead. A pickup from an address more than 50 km from the nearest partner base needs 24 hours, and airports are always exempt from that. Drivers are usually assigned the day before travel, and an assigned driver can occasionally change. The driver contacts the passenger directly by SMS, WhatsApp, phone or email, so you do not need to go looking for him. For trips booked 48+ hours ahead, choose Reserve now, pay later: ¥0 due today — your card is verified and saved, then charged automatically 48 hours before pickup, with free cancellation and a full refund until 24 hours before pickup. Trips within 48 hours are paid at booking. Cancellation is free until 24 hours before pickup with a full refund. If an airline cancels or reschedules your flight, you choose between free re-booking and a full refund, and that choice applies even inside 24 hours. More on that in Reserve now, pay later.
Child seats, infant, child or booster, are ¥2,000 each and need to be requested at booking; see are car seats required in Japan. Pets travel free in a carrier, and we ask you to tell us at booking so the driver can prepare. Most drivers have basic English and use translation apps; the driver network is majority Chinese-speaking, so most rides can be conducted directly in Chinese, and a fluent English-speaking driver can be requested for 20 per cent of the car fare, subject to availability and refunded if we cannot arrange one.

What We Can't Do
- Beat MK from Itami. Not to Kobe, not to Nara, not at any hour and not with any tier. Their published fares are ¥11,500 and ¥15,200 against our ¥24,000, and the honest recommendation for a small party out of Itami is to book them.
- Beat the bus or the boat on fare. Not at two people, not at four, not at nine. What we sell against them is the legs you do not walk, not the fare.
- Price Arima Onsen, Himeji, Ikaruga or a named Nara ryokan in an article. Those pairs are not in the fixed table we verified, so we will not print a number for them. The booking form prices them from the exact addresses in a few seconds, and Kansai onsen by private car covers Arima.
- Promise a bag count we have not seen. Published capacities are 4 large bags plus 4 carry-ons in an Alphard and 9 plus 9 in a HiAce. Tell us the real count and we will say which vehicle it is; four adults with six checked cases should book the HiAce even though the Alphard covers the passengers. See travelling Japan with heavy luggage.
- Hold a name board anywhere but an airport arrivals hall. On a hotel pickup in Kobe, a station pickup in Nara or a departure transfer the driver sends a vehicle photo and a pin instead, and free waiting is 30 minutes from the booked time. Where the driver stands at each airport is in where your driver waits.
- Wait for free indefinitely. Beyond the free allowance, waiting is ¥6,000 per hour for an Alphard and ¥8,000 for a HiAce, in 15-minute blocks, with under 15 minutes not charged. What we do promise is that the driver does not leave: we reassign his later jobs so he can stay with you.
- Guarantee you reach a flight on time. On a departure transfer we leave exactly when you ask, and traffic is traffic. For an international flight from Kansai Airport, plan to be at check-in three hours ahead and work backwards.
- Tell you the taxi rank number at Kansai Airport. The airport's own site returns a 403 to automated requests, so we could not verify stand numbers, floors or counter positions from the authoritative source and will not invent them. On a booking with us it does not arise, because the driver comes to you.
- Change what the weather does to a boat. If your Bay Shuttle is cancelled the replacement bus takes about 90 minutes, and in a typhoon there is no bus. We can pick you up instead, but a car booked at 30 minutes' notice in a storm is not something to rely on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Flat-fare taxi, limousine bus, Bay Shuttle or private car for Kansai Airport to Nara or Kobe?
For one or two travellers, public transport wins every time: the Nara limousine bus is ¥2,400 per adult, the Kobe one ¥2,200, and the Kobe Bay Shuttle's Port Liner set ticket ¥1,880 all the way to Sannomiya. For three or four with suitcases going to Kobe, a fixed private car at ¥23,000 for a Toyota Alphard is the cheapest car on the road, because MK's flat fare to central Kobe is ¥22,000 plus about ¥2,050 in tolls and ¥1,000 airport parking, or ¥25,050 all in. To Nara it is close and MK's standard car is cheaper by day. From Itami, MK wins outright to both cities and we will say so: ¥15,200 and ¥11,500 against our ¥24,000. Where we always win is after 22:00, when MK adds 20 per cent and our price does not move.
How much is a fixed-fare taxi from Kansai Airport to Nara?
MK charges by zone. Nara City east of Route 24, covering Nara Park, Todai-ji and the Nara Hotel, is ¥24,300 for a standard car, ¥26,300 for the high-grade tier and ¥32,300 for the nine-seat jumbo, one way per vehicle. West of Route 24 and Ikoma are ¥21,800 / ¥23,800 / ¥29,800; Ikaruga, for Horyu-ji, and Yamatokoriyama are ¥20,900 / ¥22,900 / ¥28,900; Tenri is ¥23,000 / ¥25,000 / ¥31,000. Those include MK's ¥300 dispatch fee but not the expressway tolls, and an airport pickup adds ¥1,000 parking. Between 22:00 and 05:00 the fare rises 20 per cent. Checked on MK's own pages on 5 September 2026, where the table is dated 20 March 2026.
Is a flat-fare taxi cheaper than a private car from Kansai Airport to Kobe?
No, and this is the one route where the numbers say so plainly. MK's flat fare to Chuo-ku east of Tor Road, the Sannomiya and Kitano side, is ¥22,000 for a standard car. MK publishes about ¥2,050 in tolls for the Kobe to Kansai Airport run and ¥1,000 for airport parking on a pickup, so the all-in daytime total is about ¥25,050. Ours is ¥23,000 for a Toyota Alphard with the tolls already inside it. Their like-for-like high-grade tier is ¥24,000, about ¥27,050 all in, and their nine-seat jumbo is ¥30,000, about ¥33,050, against our ¥28,000 nine-seat Toyota HiAce. After 22:00 add 20 per cent to theirs and nothing to ours.
What is the Kobe Bay Shuttle and is it worth taking?
It is a high-speed boat across Osaka Bay between Kansai Airport and Kobe Airport, and the fastest public link between the two. The crossing is 31 minutes, there are 16 sailings a day each way, and the connecting bus from Kansai Airport Terminal 1 stand 12 to the pier is free because it is inside the ticket. A one-way adult fare is ¥1,880, and the Port Liner set ticket carrying you on to Sannomiya is also ¥1,880, sold at the Kansai Airport ticket counter. Two honest catches: bags are limited to 2 m total across the three dimensions and 30 kg, and if wind or waves cancel the sailing you get a replacement bus taking about 90 minutes, except in a typhoon, when the operator runs no bus at all.
Does the airport bus from Kansai Airport stop at Kintetsu Nara Station?
Not in that direction. All 11 daily Kansai Airport to Nara services terminate at JR Nara Station east exit; Kintetsu Nara Station, the Nara Hotel and Tenri appear only in the airport-bound direction, and only on one departure a day, the 17:40 from JR Nara. That matters because Kintetsu Nara is the station nearer Nara Park and the Todai-ji approach, so arriving by bus usually means one more leg with your bags. Journey time is about 1 hour 43 minutes to JR Nara, or about 1 hour 25 minutes on services that skip Yamato-Saidaiji.
What is not included in a Japanese flat-fare airport taxi price?
On MK's own published terms, four things. Expressway tolls are excluded and route choice is not yours; MK's guide figures are about ¥2,050 for Kobe to Kansai Airport and about ¥1,600 for Kobe to Itami, and it publishes no figure at all for the Nara run. Airport parking on a pickup is ¥1,000 at Kansai Airport and ¥300 at Itami. Between 22:00 and 05:00 there is a 20 per cent surcharge. A standard car booked for a specified time adds ¥500. And at Itami, a driver meeting you inside arrivals rather than you walking to the reserved-taxi rank is a further ¥1,000. None of it is hidden; it is simply outside the number in the table.
Can I get a child seat in a flat-fare taxi to Nara?
MK states plainly on its airport FAQ that taxis cannot provide child seats and points you to its chartered hire division instead. Japanese law exempts taxis and other public transport from the child-restraint requirement, so this is normal rather than a failing. It matters here because Kansai Airport to Nara is a long motorway run, not a short hop. We carry rear-facing infant seats, forward-facing child seats and booster cushions at ¥2,000 each, any type the same price, requested at booking and fitted before the driver reaches the terminal.
What happens if my flight is late, and does the car, boat or bus wait?
They behave very differently. MK states that a heavily delayed flight may see the booking automatically cancelled, and that if it cannot reach you after arrival it may treat the booking as cancelled after about 30 minutes. The Bay Shuttle departs on time and does not wait, though it refunds against a printed airline delay certificate if a delay makes you miss the last sailing. The limousine buses run to a timetable. With us, free waiting on an airport pickup is 90 minutes from your actual landing, delays over 20 minutes adjust the pickup automatically, and beyond that waiting is ¥6,000 per hour for an Alphard and ¥8,000 for a HiAce, in 15-minute blocks with under 15 minutes not charged. The driver does not leave; we reassign his later jobs.
