Can You Get a Taxi at 05:00 to Kansai Airport?
Short answer: if your flight leaves Kansai Airport before about 10:00, the first Haruka does not work from Kyoto and the first bus from Namba does not exist yet. Your real choices are a limousine bus reserved the day before, a metered taxi booked the night before with surcharges you cannot see until the meter stops, or a car at a fixed price. Book before you go to bed: the window in which any of them can be arranged closes while you are asleep.
This article is about leaving. If you have just landed and are wondering whether to open an app in the arrivals hall, that is covered in Can you get an Uber from Kansai Airport?. One sentence of overlap: in Japan Uber is mostly Uber Taxi, an app layer over licensed metered taxis rather than a private-hire tier, so whatever it quotes at 05:00 is a taxi fare with a taxi's surcharges. What follows is the departure side, where the constraint is the clock rather than the price.
Kyoto to KIX ¥30,000 fixed, Osaka to KIX ¥19,000, Kyoto to Itami ¥24,000, Osaka to Itami ¥16,000. Same price at 04:00 as at 16:00, tolls included.

Can You Actually Get a Taxi at 05:30 in Kyoto or Osaka?
Yes, and "yes" answers a smaller question than the one you are asking. Cars are on the road at 05:30 in both cities; what is not settled is whether one will be free, where it will be, and what it will cost.
The Osaka Taxi Association publishes the Osaka-area tariff on its own site, revised on 5 November 2025. For a standard car the meter starts at ¥600 for the first 1.2 km, then adds ¥100 per 231 m, with a time-and-distance component of ¥100 per 1 minute 25 seconds when the car is crawling. Three lines matter far more to a 05:00 departure than the meter does:
- Late-night and early-morning surcharge: 20 per cent, from 22:00 to 05:00. This is the cliff. A car at your door at 04:45 is inside it; a car at 05:15 is not.
- Dispatch fee: ¥400 per trip, charged whenever a car is sent to you rather than flagged down.
- Early-morning reservation fee: ¥400 per booking, in the association's own words applying to reservations that place or hold a car in the 04:00 to 08:00 window. This one is easy to miss, because it survives the end of the surcharge: a 06:30 booked pickup carries no 20 per cent and still carries this fee.
One line goes the other way and is worth knowing on a long airport run: Osaka publishes a long-distance discount of 10 per cent on the amount above ¥9,000. One line undoes it: the association states that expressway and toll-road charges are separate from the fare and paid at cost by the passenger.
Kyoto Prefecture's taxi association publishes its own tariff, and it is not the same. The standard car starts at ¥500 and adds ¥100 per 255 m. The same 20 per cent surcharge runs from 22:00 to 05:00, the same 10 per cent discount applies above ¥9,000 though some operators do not run it, and tolls are again excluded. Kyoto adds one clause Osaka does not: if the car stays under 10 km/h for a sustained period, ¥100 is added. That is dormant at 05:30 and expensive at 08:30, one more reason the early slot is the good slot on a meter.
The tariff answers the money question. It does not answer the availability question, and neither association promises that a car will be free in your district at 05:30. That is the honest gap.
What the apps say about a booked early-morning ride
The GO app is what to use if you want an early-morning taxi arranged through a screen rather than a phone call. Its service page describes AI reservations as a booking placed for a time between 15 minutes and 7 days ahead, and its pricing page, updated 24 July 2026, puts the handling fee at ¥370 to ¥980 by area and demand. GO states in its own words that arrival at the requested time is not assured, and that if the car is 5 or more minutes late the handling fee is not charged. Around that sit an app dispatch fee of ¥100, an in-car payment fee of ¥100, a peak charge of roughly ¥30 to ¥100, a priority pass fee of ¥300 to ¥980, and a cancellation fee from ¥500. Tolls and paid parking are passed through in full.
Two more GO lines belong here. The figure shown under the meter option is described on GO's own page as an estimate, and GO warns that its fixed-fare option can come out higher than the meter. And GO's airport flat fare is a Tokyo product covering Haneda and Narita, so at Kansai Airport and Itami you are back on the meter with fees on top. Uber's Japanese ride page says airport rides can be booked in advance and lists both Kansai airports, but publishes no minimum notice, no booking horizon and no Kansai fare.
| What you are choosing at 05:00 | What the operator publishes | What it does not publish |
|---|---|---|
| Metered taxi, Osaka or Kyoto | Osaka meter ¥600 / 1.2 km then ¥100 / 231 m, Kyoto ¥500 then ¥100 / 255 m; 20% surcharge 22:00 to 05:00; Osaka ¥400 dispatch and ¥400 early-morning reservation fee for 04:00 to 08:00; 10% off above ¥9,000; tolls extra | Whether a car is free in your district at that hour |
| GO or Uber, booked in advance | GO: 15 minutes to 7 days ahead, handling fee ¥370 to ¥980, app fee ¥100, cancellation from ¥500, arrival time not assured. Uber: that airport rides can be pre-booked and that KIX and Itami are served | Any Kansai airport flat fare; Uber's notice, horizon and price |
| RydAgent, booked in advance | Kyoto to KIX ¥30,000 / ¥34,000; Osaka city to KIX ¥19,000 / ¥24,000; Kyoto to Itami ¥24,000 / ¥26,000; Osaka city to Itami ¥16,000 / ¥19,000 (Alphard / HiAce). Tolls, parking, fuel and taxes included. No late-night surcharge | A journey time. Nobody can promise one, and we do not |
How Early Must You Leave? Work Backwards From the Cut-Off, Not the Drive
The number that decides your alarm is the airline's check-in deadline, not the distance to the airport. Most people compute the drive, add a round number and feel safe, then discover that the counter closed while they were in the security queue.
We could not retrieve Kansai Airport's own check-in guidance. Its website returns HTTP 403 to automated requests, tested on 5 September 2026, and Itami's does the same, so we are not describing terminals, floors or airport operating hours from memory. Instead, here is an airline's own rule, labelled as that airline's rule. Peach Aviation is the fair one to quote, because it operates a large share of the early departures from Kansai Airport and publishes its deadlines plainly:
- International: check-in machine or counter open from 120 minutes to 50 minutes before departure. Peach notes its international automatic check-in machines exist only at Kansai, Narita and Naha.
- Domestic: machine or counter 90 to 30 minutes before departure, or 120 to 30 minutes in the app, with baggage drop published as 90 to 30 minutes before departure.
- The consequence, in Peach's own words: once the deadline has passed you cannot check a bag or board, and there is no transfer to another flight and no refund.
- The early-morning footnote, which is why this section exists: Peach states that for early flights the counter may not be able to process you from 120 minutes before departure. The window can open later than the published start.
Cut-offs also move. ANA published on its own domestic pages that from September 2026 baggage acceptance for domestic flights departing Haneda ends 30 minutes before departure. That is Haneda, not Itami, and we could not retrieve an Itami figure from ANA's site, so we are not applying it to your flight. It is here as evidence that last year's number is not the one on this year's boarding pass. Check your airline's page the week you fly.
Now the arithmetic. Our advice on a departure has not changed: allow 3 hours at the airport for an international flight. Add our reference driving times, which assume the light traffic you actually get before 06:00 rather than the traffic you get at 08:00.
| Departure | Be at the terminal by | Reference driving time | Leave your accommodation at about |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08:00 international from Kansai Airport, staying in Kyoto | 05:00 | About 90 minutes | 03:30 |
| 09:00 international from Kansai Airport, staying in Kyoto | 06:00 | About 90 minutes | 04:30 |
| 08:00 international from Kansai Airport, staying in Osaka city | 05:00 | About 50 minutes | 04:10 |
| 10:00 international from Kansai Airport, staying in Osaka city | 07:00 | About 50 minutes | 06:10 |
| 07:30 domestic from Itami, staying in Osaka city | 06:30 or earlier, per your airline's cut-off | About 30 minutes | 05:50 |
| 08:00 domestic from Itami, staying in Kyoto | 07:00 or earlier, per your airline's cut-off | About 60 minutes | 05:50 |
Two honest qualifications. The driving times are reference figures, not a promise; traffic, weather and roadworks are outside anyone's control, and we do not write guarantees about arriving at an airport by a particular time. The Itami rows say "or earlier, per your airline's cut-off" because we could not verify an Itami baggage deadline from a carrier's own page and will not invent one. The 3 hours are not padding you can shave: they are immigration, security and a bag-drop queue that forms before the counters open.
What the First Trains and Buses Actually Do at That Hour
Where public transport works before 07:00, it works well and it is far cheaper than we are. Where it does not exist yet, no amount of planning creates it. Here is what the operators publish, checked on 5 September 2026.
Kyoto to Kansai Airport
The first Haruka leaves Kyoto at 05:45 and reaches Kansai Airport at 07:10, the same on weekdays and at weekends on JR West's own published timetable. That train calls at Shin-Osaka at 06:16, Osaka at 06:22 and Tennoji at 06:37, all arriving at 07:10. The second out of Kyoto is 06:21, arriving 07:41, and the third is 06:44, arriving 08:19.
Read that against the check-in table above. Arriving at 07:10 works comfortably for a 10:30 international departure and is tight for a 10:00 one. For anything at 09:00 or earlier the first train is not running when you need it, and there is no earlier one to catch. A lot of long-haul departures from Kansai Airport are earlier than the train.
The limousine bus starts earlier and comes with a condition. Kansai Airport Transportation publishes a first departure from Kyoto Station Hachijo-guchi at 04:30, reaching Terminal 2 at 05:56 and Terminal 1 at 06:07, followed by 05:20 (Terminal 1 at 06:45) and 05:40 (Terminal 1 at 07:05). The fare is ¥2,800 adult and ¥1,400 child one way, and the published journey time is about 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The condition is on the same page: every airport-bound service on the Kyoto route is reservation-only with assigned seats. Reservations go through the Keihan Bus reservation centre on 075-682-4400, published as open 09:00 to 19:00, or online, with seats released one month ahead. That is the trap: realise at 22:00 that you need the 04:30 bus and the telephone route has closed.
Osaka to Kansai Airport
The first Rapi:t leaves Namba at 06:00 and reaches Kansai Airport at 06:35 on weekdays and 06:37 at weekends, according to Nankai's published timetable, with the second at 06:30 arriving 07:08. Rapi:t is entirely reserved seating, and Nankai publishes the limited express charge for the whole run at ¥700 for a regular seat and ¥910 for a super seat, on top of the ordinary fare, which we could not retrieve from Nankai's own pages today and are therefore not printing.
The Osaka Station limousine bus starts at 04:50, the earliest scheduled public option from the Umeda area, with six departures before 06:00, at ¥1,800 adult and ¥900 child one way and a published journey time to Terminal 1 of about 60 minutes. From Namba OCAT the first bus is 06:10, reaching Terminal 1 at 06:58, at ¥1,400 adult and ¥700 child, about 48 minutes. Neither takes reservations.
Three operator conditions matter more before dawn than at midday. Kansai Airport Transportation states that its buses are seat-limited, that you cannot board a full one, and that a full bus means waiting for the next service; that except where it is at fault it accepts no liability for losses caused by a delay; and that the hold takes a maximum of 2 pieces per person. A family of four with five checked bags and a pushchair is over that limit before anyone argues.
Kyoto and Osaka to Itami
Itami is easier, because it is closer. Hankyu's airport limousine timetables, checked on 5 September 2026, publish the same times all week: 05:50 from the Osaka Station area at ¥730 adult, about 25 to 30 minutes from the Osaka Marubiru stop, and 05:40 from Kyoto Station Hachijo-guchi at ¥1,500 adult, about 50 to 55 minutes, that run starting further north at Demachiyanagi at 05:26. We could not extract a first-train figure for the Osaka Monorail, whose timetable is drawn by a script rather than published as a table, so check its station page for your date.
And here is the obvious thing rather than a dance around it. For one or two people leaving Umeda for Itami, the ¥730 bus is the right answer and our ¥16,000 car is not. The same goes for the first Haruka if your flight leaves after 10:30. The car earns its place at the hours and in the group sizes where those options are absent, not everywhere.
| Public option, departure direction | First departure | Reaches the airport | Fare (adult, one way) | Reservation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haruka, Kyoto to Kansai Airport | 05:45 | 07:10 | Fare plus limited express charge | Seat reservation available |
| Haruka, Shin-Osaka to Kansai Airport | 06:16 | 07:10 | As above | Seat reservation available |
| Bus, Kyoto Station to Kansai Airport | 04:30 | T2 05:56, T1 06:07 | ¥2,800 | Required on every airport-bound service |
| Bus, Osaka Station to Kansai Airport | 04:50 | Before 06:00 on the earliest services | ¥1,800 | None, first come first served |
| Rapi:t, Namba to Kansai Airport | 06:00 | 06:35 | Express charge ¥700 plus fare | All seats reserved |
| Bus, Namba OCAT to Kansai Airport | 06:10 | T1 06:58 | ¥1,400 | None |
| Bus, Osaka Station area to Itami | 05:50 | South 06:20, north 06:25 | ¥730 | None |
| Bus, Kyoto Station to Itami | 05:40 | South 06:30, north 06:35 | ¥1,500 | None |
The Machiya Problem in Reverse
Arriving at a Kyoto machiya is a navigation problem. Leaving one at 05:30 is a logistics problem, and it is harder. On arrival there is a host, a lit street and somebody who can walk to the corner and wave. Whether a car can reach a particular Kyoto door is its own subject, written up in Kyoto ryokan or machiya: can a car reach the door?. What changes before dawn is everything around it: the host has gone home, the lane is unlit, and instead of walking in with your bags you are carrying them out, in as many trips as your suitcases require, over gravel or stone.
Four things make that morning work, and all four are done the night before:
- Name the meeting point in the booking, not on the morning. If the property is on a lane a car cannot enter, put the nearest corner, junction or car park in the notes. A pin dropped on the house at 05:25 is a pin on a place the car cannot stop.
- Walk the route in daylight the day before and count the trips. Two adults with four large cases on a 60 m lane is two trips each, which is 6 to 8 minutes you have not budgeted.
- Expect a photo, not a board. The driver contacts you before pickup and sends a photo of the vehicle and its exact stopping position. There is no name board on a drop-off; name boards belong to airport arrivals.
- Know the waiting rule. Free waiting on a drop-off is 30 minutes from the booked time, not the 90 minutes an airport pickup gets from actual landing. Beyond that, waiting is billed at ¥6,000 per hour for an Alphard and ¥8,000 for a HiAce, in 15-minute blocks, with under 15 minutes not charged. What we do promise is that the driver does not leave: we reassign his later jobs so he can stay with you.
Hotels have their own version. A large Osaka hotel has a night clerk and a lit entrance at 04:30 and none of this applies. A small guesthouse or serviced apartment may have a locked street door and a lobby unstaffed until 07:00, so tell us at booking and the driver will call or message a few minutes out. Settle the bill and agree the key handback the previous evening, and remember that luggage forwarding is a day-before tool, not a departure-morning one.
Route by Route: What a Pre-Booked Departure Costs
Fixed, per vehicle, all-inclusive, and identical at 04:00 and 16:00. These are the four Kansai city pairs that cover most early departures.
| Departure leg | Alphard (up to 4 passengers, 4 large bags) | HiAce (up to 9 passengers, 9 large bags) | Reference driving time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osaka city to Kansai Airport (KIX) | ¥19,000 | ¥24,000 | About 50 minutes |
| Kyoto to Kansai Airport (KIX) | ¥30,000 | ¥34,000 | About 90 minutes |
| Osaka city to Itami (ITM) | ¥16,000 | ¥19,000 | About 30 minutes |
| Kyoto to Itami (ITM) | ¥24,000 | ¥26,000 | About 60 minutes |
Divided by the people in the car, the Kyoto to Kansai Airport run is ¥7,500 each for four in an Alphard and ¥3,778 each for nine in a HiAce, against ¥2,800 each on the reserved bus. On fare alone the bus wins, and it should: it is a bus. What the car buys at 04:30 is a departure time you chose, a vehicle sized to your bags, and the absence of "this bus is full, please wait for the next one".
The nearest comparison is a taxi company's own fixed airport fare, which Kansai has more of than anywhere in Japan. We are not reprinting that table, because we did it in Kansai and Itami fixed-fare taxis compared. What belongs here is the part that only bites on a departure, from MK's own pages on 5 September 2026:
- Tolls are extra. MK states that expressway and toll-road charges are not included in the fixed fare, a meaningful addition on a Kyoto to Kansai Airport standard-car band that starts at ¥24,100. Its ¥300 dispatch charge, by contrast, is already inside the published fare.
- Specifying a time costs ¥500, as a separate time-designation reservation fee on standard and jumbo vehicles. On an airport departure you are, by definition, specifying a time.
- The 20 per cent band applies to them too: MK publishes the same 22:00 to 05:00 surcharge, so a 04:40 pickup carries it. Its standard, minivan and high-grade cars run 24 hours; the jumbo van runs a limited schedule, which matters if nine of you need one vehicle at 04:30.
- Cancellation favours them. For airport-bound rides MK publishes free cancellation until 10 minutes before the booked time, ¥1,270 from 10 minutes before, and 100 per cent once the time has passed. That is more forgiving close to departure than our own rule, which is free cancellation and a full refund until 24 hours before pickup and no refund inside 24 hours. If you genuinely expect to decide at the last moment, that is a point in their favour, not ours.
Against that, our side is short. The price includes tolls and parking, and there is no time-designation fee, no early-morning reservation fee, no 20 per cent band and no separate dispatch charge. The number you see when you book is the number you pay.
How to Actually Book a 05:00 Departure With Us
One rule matters more than the rest, so it goes first. A booking placed on the website between 20:00 and 08:00 Japan time cannot be scheduled earlier than 10:00 the following morning. Book by 19:00 the night before and the 04:30 slot is there. Wake at 01:00 having forgotten, and the form will not offer it: message us on WhatsApp or call +81 70-8830-8866 and we can usually still arrange it, because the constraint is the form's rule rather than anyone being unreachable.
Outside that window the standard rule for airport transfers is a minimum of 2 hours before pickup, and booking close in costs nothing extra: no rush fee, no night loading, the same fixed price whether you book in April for October or at 20:00 for 04:30. Our piece on last-minute Kansai Airport transfers covers booking inside a few hours.
What follows the booking is deliberately dull, which is what you want at 04:30:
- Drivers are usually assigned the day before travel, and an assigned driver can occasionally change. The driver contacts you before pickup by SMS, WhatsApp, phone or email, and on a departure sends a photo of the vehicle and its exact position. The pickup time is yours: we leave when you say, and there is no landing to track.
- Payment. For trips booked 48+ hours ahead, choose Reserve now, pay later: ¥0 due today — your card is verified and saved, then charged automatically 48 hours before pickup, with free cancellation and a full refund until 24 hours before pickup. Trips within 48 hours are paid at booking. The mechanics are in Reserve now, pay later.
- Cancellation. Free until 24 hours before pickup, with a full refund. Inside 24 hours there is no refund. If the airline cancels or reschedules your flight, you choose between free re-booking and a full refund, and that choice applies even inside 24 hours; send us the airline's notice or your new flight details.
- Extras you choose. Child seats, infant, child or booster, are ¥2,000 each and must be requested at booking. Pets travel free in a carrier; tell us at booking. Most drivers have basic English and use translation apps; the driver network is majority Chinese-speaking, so most rides can be conducted directly in Chinese, and a fluent English-speaking driver can be requested for 20 per cent of the car fare, subject to availability and refunded if we cannot arrange one.
What the price includes
Your price is all-inclusive: tolls, parking, fuel, taxes, and meet & greet with a name board at pickup. Free waiting is included — 90 minutes from actual landing on airport pickups, 30 minutes on other rides. Tipping is never expected — never required. The only extras are ones you choose.
On a departure, read the middle of that sentence carefully. The name board belongs to airport arrivals; there is none on a drop-off, and the figure that applies to you is 30 minutes of free waiting from the booked time, not 90. Everything else holds: no toll on top, no parking on top, no surcharge for the hour.
Who we are: RydAgent is operated by PLENS Inc. (株式会社PLENS), Koshigaya, Saitama, registered in Japan as a Travel Service Arrangement Business. We are not a fleet — we are a Japan-based dispatch operation working with licensed partner fleets across the country, with 36,000+ airport transfers processed.
Go With the Train, the Bus, a Taxi, or a Booked Car
- Go with the first Haruka if you are leaving Kyoto and your flight is after about 10:30. It departs at 05:45 and reaches Kansai Airport at 07:10, far cheaper than any car. Reserve the seat rather than gambling on an unreserved carriage with suitcases.
- Go with the ¥730 bus if you are one or two people leaving the Osaka Station area for Itami on a flight after about 08:00. The 05:50 departure reaches the south terminal at 06:20 for a fraction of a taxi's meter.
- Go with the reserved Kyoto airport bus if you are two people with two cases and a flight around 08:30 to 09:30, and organised enough to book it the previous afternoon. At ¥2,800 each, arriving Terminal 1 at 06:07, it is the best-value early option out of Kyoto, subject to the 2-bags-per-person hold limit.
- Go with a metered taxi booked the night before if you are one or two people going a short distance, your pickup is after 05:00 so the 20 per cent band has ended, and your hotel can arrange it at the front desk. Budget for the ¥400 dispatch fee, the ¥400 Osaka early-morning reservation fee, and the tolls.
- Go with a booked private car if your flight leaves Kansai Airport before about 09:00 and you are staying in Kyoto. This is the clearest case in the article: the first train is 05:45 arriving 07:10, the reserved bus needs a reservation you may no longer be able to place, and the fixed ¥30,000 covers the tolls a taxi adds on top.
- Go with a booked private car if you are three or more, or have more bags than people, or you are leaving a machiya or an apartment on a lane, or travelling with small children, a wheelchair or elderly parents. Two pieces per person is the hold limit on the limousine buses. An Alphard takes 4 passengers with 4 large bags plus 4 carry-ons; a HiAce takes 9 with 9 plus 9. Four people with six checked bags should book the HiAce even though the Alphard covers the seats.
- Book the night before either way. The Kyoto bus reservation line shuts at 19:00, the GO app needs 15 minutes' notice and does not promise the time, and our booking form will not sell you a same-morning 05:00 slot after midnight.
What We Can't Do
- Promise you will reach the airport by a particular time. We do not write guarantees about arrival at an airport, because traffic, weather and roadworks are not ours to control. We publish reference driving times, we recommend 3 hours before an international departure, and we leave at the time you set. If a missed flight comes down to traffic, there is no refund and no compensation from us.
- Choose your departure time for you. The pickup time on a drop-off is entirely yours, and we are not responsible for a flight missed because the plan itself was too tight. If you are unsure, tell us the flight number when you book and ask.
- Hold a name board on a departure. Name boards belong to airport arrivals; on a drop-off the driver sends a vehicle photo and exact position instead, and free waiting is 30 minutes from the booked time rather than 90 from a landing. Beyond that, waiting is billed at ¥6,000 per hour for an Alphard and ¥8,000 for a HiAce, in 15-minute blocks, with under 15 minutes not charged. What we do promise is that the driver does not leave: we reassign his later jobs so he can stay with you.
- Sell you a next-morning 05:00 pickup on the website after 20:00. Bookings placed between 20:00 and 08:00 Japan time cannot be scheduled before 10:00 the following morning. Message us on WhatsApp or call +81 70-8830-8866 and we can usually still arrange it, but the form itself will say no.
- Promise a bag count we have not seen. The published capacities are 4 large bags plus 4 carry-ons in an Alphard and 9 plus 9 in a HiAce. Inside those numbers we give you a straight answer; beyond them, or with golf bags, skis, bike boxes or a pushchair in the mix, send us the real list and we will tell you honestly what fits.
- Tell you Kansai Airport's own check-in cut-offs, or a first-train time for the Osaka Monorail. Both airport websites return HTTP 403 to automated requests, tested on 5 September 2026, so we used an airline's published rule and labelled it as that airline's rule, and terminal numbers and floors are deliberately absent here. The monorail's timetable is rendered by a script rather than a table we could read, so we left it out instead of estimating.
- Check you in, or carry your bags past the kerb. The driver loads at your door and unloads at the terminal entrance. Immigration, security and anything requiring your passport are yours. Driver assistance inside the terminal can be arranged, but it must be requested at booking so the time is reserved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I book a car the night before or just try to hail one at 05:00 in Kyoto or Osaka?
Book the night before. Taxis exist at 05:00, but nothing about them is settled in advance: the Osaka Taxi Association's published tariff adds 20 per cent between 22:00 and 05:00, a ¥400 dispatch fee, and a separate ¥400 early-morning reservation fee for any car booked into the 04:00 to 08:00 window, with expressway tolls on top. The GO app takes advance bookings from 15 minutes to 7 days ahead for ¥370 to ¥980, and states plainly that arrival at the requested time is not assured. A pre-booked RydAgent car is a fixed ¥30,000 from Kyoto to Kansai Airport and ¥19,000 from Osaka city for an Alphard carrying up to 4 passengers and 4 large bags, at 04:00 exactly as at 16:00, tolls included.
Can you actually get a taxi at 05:30 in Kyoto or Osaka, and what does it cost extra?
Yes, and 05:30 sits on the cheaper side of a real cliff edge. Both associations publish a late-night and early-morning surcharge of 20 per cent running from 22:00 to 05:00, so a 04:45 pickup carries it and a 05:15 pickup does not. Osaka adds two flat fees on top of the meter: ¥400 for dispatch and ¥400 as an early-morning reservation fee for any booking placing a car with you between 04:00 and 08:00. Osaka's meter is ¥600 for the first 1.2 km then ¥100 per 231 m, Kyoto's is ¥500 then ¥100 per 255 m, and neither includes tolls. Availability, not price, is the real risk at that hour.
How early do I have to leave Kyoto for a 09:00 international flight from Kansai Airport?
Plan to be at the terminal by 06:00, which means leaving a Kyoto hotel at about 04:30. We advise arriving 3 hours ahead of an international departure, and our reference driving time from Kyoto to Kansai Airport is about 90 minutes. The airline cut-off is the hard part of that sum. Peach, which flies many of the early departures from Kansai Airport, publishes an international check-in and bag-drop window of 120 to 50 minutes before departure, and states that once the deadline passes you cannot drop a bag or board, with no transfer to another flight and no refund.
What is the first train from Kyoto to Kansai Airport?
The 05:45 Haruka, arriving at Kansai Airport at 07:10. That is the first departure on JR West's own published timetable, the same on weekdays and at weekends. It calls at Shin-Osaka at 06:16, Osaka at 06:22 and Tennoji at 06:37, all arriving at 07:10, and the second Haruka out of Kyoto is 06:21, arriving 07:41. If your flight leaves before about 10:00 the first train does not get you there with a sensible margin, which is why most early departures from Kyoto end up in a car.
What is the first bus to Kansai Airport, and do I need to reserve it?
From Kyoto Station Hachijo-guchi the first airport bus is 04:30, reaching Terminal 2 at 05:56 and Terminal 1 at 06:07, and every airport-bound service on that route is reservation-only with assigned seats. Kansai Airport Transportation publishes the reservation line as 075-682-4400 at the Keihan Bus reservation centre, open 09:00 to 19:00, with online booking as an alternative and seats released one month ahead. From the Osaka Station area the first bus is 04:50 with no reservation taken, though seats are limited and a full bus means waiting for the next one. From Namba OCAT nothing runs before 06:10. All of these accept a maximum of 2 pieces of luggage per person in the hold.
Is there a late-night or early-morning surcharge on a pre-booked private car?
No. A 04:00 departure is the same price as a 16:00 one: ¥30,000 from Kyoto to Kansai Airport, ¥19,000 from Osaka city, ¥24,000 from Kyoto to Itami and ¥16,000 from Osaka city to Itami for a Toyota Alphard carrying up to 4 passengers and 4 large bags, and ¥34,000, ¥24,000, ¥26,000 and ¥19,000 respectively for a 9-seat Toyota HiAce. Booking late adds nothing either. The price includes tolls, parking, fuel and taxes, which matters here because the Kyoto expressway toll is charged on top of both a metered fare and a taxi company's own fixed fare.
The car cannot reach my machiya door at 05:30. What happens?
You agree the meeting point the night before, not on the morning. Many Kyoto machiya sit on lanes a vehicle cannot enter, and at 05:30 in the dark there is no host at the door. Put the nearest corner a car can reach in the booking notes, and the driver will contact you before pickup and send a photo of the vehicle and its exact position. There is no name board on a departure, because name boards belong to airport arrivals. Free waiting on a drop-off is 30 minutes from the booked time rather than the 90 minutes an airport pickup gets, so walk the route in daylight the day before and count the trips your bags will take.
Can I book a 05:00 pickup on your website at one in the morning?
Not if you book after 20:00 the night before. A booking placed on the website between 20:00 and 08:00 Japan time can be scheduled no earlier than 10:00 the following morning. Book before 20:00 and the 05:00 slot is there; wake at 01:00 having forgotten and the form will not offer it. If that happens, message us on WhatsApp or call +81 70-8830-8866 and we can usually still arrange it. Outside that window the minimum for airport transfers is 2 hours before pickup, with no surcharge for booking close in.
Pick your own departure time, get the driver's photo and position the evening before, and pay the same fixed price at 04:00 as at 16:00.
