What Is Golden Week?
Golden Week is a cluster of four national holidays that fall within a single week each spring, and it is when a large share of Japan takes leave at the same time. The holidays themselves are on fixed dates: Showa Day on 29 April, then Constitution Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day on 3, 4 and 5 May.
What changes year to year is how those fixed dates land against the weekend, and that determines how long the exodus actually runs.

2027 is a well-shaped Golden Week from a traveller's point of view and a heavy one from a crowding point of view. Taking only Friday 30 April off bridges 29 April through 5 May into seven consecutive days. Take 6 and 7 May as well and it runs to 9 May — eleven days.
One small detail worth being precise about: none of the four holidays falls on a Sunday in 2027, so there are no substitute holidays (振替休日) that year. The block is exactly as shown.
The practical consequence: pressure builds from the weekend of 24–25 April as people position themselves, peaks on the outbound around 29 April to 1 May, and reverses hard on 5–6 May.
The Rule Most Guides Miss: Nozomi Has No Non-Reserved Cars
This is the single most consequential Golden Week fact for anyone planning to move between cities.
On the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, JR Central runs Nozomi as all-reserved (全車指定席) through the Golden Week peak — in 2026 that window ran 24 April to 6 May. During it there are no non-reserved cars on those services at all.
- "Turn up and stand in the non-reserved car" is not available. A non-reserved ticket lets you stand in the deck areas between cars; taking a seat requires the reserved-seat supplement.
- A Japan Rail Pass does not solve this. The pass covers travel, not a seat, and there is no non-reserved section to fall back on. You need an actual reservation — free with the pass, but subject to the same sell-outs.
- Hikari, Kodama, Mizuho and Sakura keep non-reserved cars year-round. That is the real plan B: slower than a Nozomi, but boardable without a reservation.
JR Central publishes the exact all-reserved window each year, so check the dates for your travel year rather than assuming 2026's apply. The pattern — that the window opens several days before the holidays themselves — has been consistent.
What Golden Week Means for Your Transfer
Trains
Shinkansen reservations open one month before the travel date and popular Golden Week departures go quickly. Local and commuter trains run standing-room-only on the peak days. Moving large luggage through Shinjuku or Tokyo Station during that week is genuinely unpleasant, and the oversized-baggage spaces on the shinkansen are the first thing to sell out.
Highways
Expressways see heavy jams, particularly outbound towards Hakone, the Fuji Five Lakes and Kansai on the first days and inbound on the last. A drive that normally takes 90 minutes can take three hours. A private car sits in exactly the same traffic as everyone else — that is worth saying plainly.
What a Private Transfer Does and Does Not Fix
It does not fix traffic. What it removes is the seat lottery, the luggage handling through crowded stations, and the uncertainty of arriving somewhere and finding the queue longer than expected. Whether that is worth several times the train fare depends entirely on your group size and how much you are carrying.
To be direct about the comparison: from Narita, the Keisei Skyliner runs to Ueno in about 36 minutes for roughly ¥2,520 per person, and the Airport Limousine Bus serves major hotels at ¥3,200–3,600 a seat with an allowance of two pieces of luggage each, within 50 × 60 × 120 cm and 30 kg. Against ¥24,000 for a private car, the train and the bus are far cheaper per head during Golden Week exactly as they are in February. Nothing about the holiday changes that arithmetic — it only changes how crowded the cheap options feel.

Charter a car for the day to explore without worrying about trains or parking:

One constraint that matters specifically in Golden Week: charter includes a distance allowance of 40 km per hour booked. That is generous for a city day, but a Golden Week itinerary that strings together Hakone, Gotemba and the Fuji lakes can exceed it while the car spends much of the day stationary in traffic. Golden Week Booking Tips
- Price the train first. For one or two people it will usually win, and knowing by how much makes the decision an informed one rather than a default.
- Reserve any shinkansen seat the morning bookings open — one month before the travel date. During the all-reserved window there is no fallback.
- Book the car 2+ weeks in advance. Availability, not price, is the constraint during Golden Week.
- Build in the buffer. Highway traffic is heavy on the peak days and a pre-booked car is subject to all of it.
- No holiday surcharge. Pricing is the same during Golden Week as any other time.
When Not to Book a Private Transfer
- You are one or two people with normal luggage. The Skyliner or the limousine bus costs a fraction of a car and the trains run on time regardless of the expressway situation.
- Your route is city-to-city on a trunk line. A reserved shinkansen seat beats a car on both time and money for Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Osaka, holiday or not. Reserve early rather than switching to a car.
- Your plans are still fluid. Free cancellation ends 24 hours before the trip; inside that window there is no refund. If you are likely to move things around, hold off booking until the plan is firm.
The cases where a car genuinely earns its price during Golden Week are the same ones as any other week, just scarcer: groups of five or more, a lot of luggage, a destination the trains do not reach directly, or an arrival late enough that the alternatives have stopped running.
