Tolls, Tax & Tip: What a Japan Private Transfer Includes

The Question We Get Almost Every Day

A traveler gets our quote — say, ¥46,000 for Haneda Airport to a Mt. Fuji lakeside hotel — and writes back before booking: "Does this price include Meet & Greet Service, Tolls, Tax and Tip?" Or the longer version: "Are tolls, parking, fuel and waiting time included?"

It's a completely fair question, because in Japanese ground transport the word "price" rarely means the final number. A taxi meter doesn't include the expressway. A ride-hailing quote doesn't include the tolls either. And in the charter world, the base rate is often just the beginning of the invoice.

So here is the complete answer — for our own pricing, and for the industry practices that make travelers ask in the first place.

The Short Answer: What ¥46,000 Actually Covers

Every RydAgent transfer price — airport, port, Disney, city-to-city — is all-inclusive. Using the Haneda → Mt. Fuji / Kawaguchiko route (from ¥46,000 for an Alphard, ¥59,000 for a 9-seat HiAce, about 2 hours) as the example:

The same applies to our Narita → Tokyo route (from ¥24,000), Haneda → Tokyo (from ¥16,000), and every other fixed or distance-quoted route. The number you see when booking is the number Stripe charges. That's the whole system.

Why You Have to Ask: How Ground Transport in Japan Bills Extras

The reason this question exists is that most alternatives genuinely do add costs on top of the number you first see:

• Metered taxis. The meter is the fare for distance and time only. Expressway tolls are added at the end (roughly ¥2,900 for a Narita–central Tokyo run), and between 22:00 and 05:00 a night surcharge of about 20% applies. You learn the real total when you arrive.
• Ride-hailing apps. Upfront prices move with demand, and expressway tolls are still billed separately on top of the quoted fare. On airport runs that's a meaningful gap between the number you accepted and the number on your card.
• Some transfer and charter operators. A common industry format is a base rate with tolls, parking and fuel "at actual cost" added to the invoice afterwards. In the bus charter world it goes further: line items for the driver's meals — the famous ocha-dai ("tea money") — plus the driver's accommodation and even the driver's own transport to the pickup point can appear as separate charges.

None of this is dishonest — it's just how each pricing model works. But it means the burden lands on you, the traveler, to ask "so what will I actually pay?" before every single trip.

Our Position: One Number Before You Book, Then Forget About Money

That's also why hourly charters follow the same rule: the rate (from ¥7,000/hour for an Alphard within Tokyo, 8-hour minimum, 40 km included per hour) already contains expressway tolls, parking and fuel. A full-day Hakone loop with three parking stops and two toll gates costs exactly what the hours cost — the invoice doesn't grow while you sightsee.

Tipping in Japan: Please Don't Worry About It

Japan famously has no tipping culture — taxi drivers routinely chase customers down the street to return forgotten change. Our policy matches the country: tipping is never expected and never required. Drivers are paid properly without it, and they are not allowed to ask.

If a driver goes far beyond and you genuinely want to leave something, it will be accepted with thanks — but it changes nothing about the service you receive, and nobody will hover at the trunk waiting for it. When you compare us with services that build a "gratuity" into their price: we simply don't need that line, because there's nothing to pre-pay.

The Honest List: What Can Cost Extra

All-inclusive doesn't mean "nothing can ever be added" — it means nothing is added unless you choose it. The complete list of optional extras:

• Child / infant / booster seats: ¥2,000 per seat, fitted before pickup — just select them at booking.
• English-speaking driver upgrade: +20% of the car fare, selectable at booking. Standard drivers use translation apps and handle English-speaking guests daily, so this is optional, not necessary.
• Driver assistance time (hotel check-in help, IC-card purchase and similar): from ¥3,000 per 30 minutes, arranged in advance.
• Waiting beyond the free allowance: after the free 90 minutes from landing (airport pickups) or 30 minutes (other rides), Alphard ¥6,000 / HiAce ¥8,000 per hour, in 15-minute blocks — under 15 minutes is not charged. The driver does not leave when the free time runs out: if he has another transfer after yours, we reassign it to a different driver so he can keep waiting for you.
• Extra stops or destination changes you request mid-trip: quoted in writing before anything is charged.
• Charter overtime and overnights: overtime billed at the same hourly rate — no premium — in 15-minute blocks (under 15 minutes free); multi-day charters carry a ¥10,000/night driver overnight fee.

Every one of these is something you actively pick, priced before it happens. There is no category of "we'll see at the end".

The Bottom Line

If you've been quoted a price by us, the answer to "does it include tolls, tax and tip?" is: yes, yes, and there is no tip. Compare any quote — ours or anyone's — by asking one question: "Is this the number that will be on my card, or the number the invoice starts from?" With RydAgent it's always the former.

What is included on Kansai routes

The inclusions are identical on Kansai Airport, Itami and Kobe Airport routes: tolls (the KIX bridge and the Hanshin Expressway are part of the price), parking, fuel, taxes, the name-board meet and greet, 90 minutes of free waiting from actual landing on airport pickups and 30 minutes on other rides. Nothing is added for a late landing.

The only extras remain the ones you choose: child seats ¥2,000 each, a fluent English-speaking driver at +20% of the car fare, and waiting beyond the free allowance at ¥6,000 per hour (Alphard) or ¥8,000 (HiAce) in 15-minute blocks.
