Booked Within 24 Hours: What Our Own Data Shows

We pulled our own booking records for this article. Of all confirmed website bookings to date, nearly one in five was made within 24 hours of the pickup time — and a handful within six hours. Their completion rate is the same as bookings made weeks ahead. In other words: last-minute travelers aren't an exception we grudgingly squeeze in. Read that table honestly and two things jump out. From Haneda, if you are one to three people with normal luggage, the taxi rank is cheaper and perfectly good — take it. From Narita, the fixed-price private car costs less than the airport taxi's fixed fare before tolls are even added, seats up to 4 with 4 large cases (or 9 people in a HiAce from ¥30,000), and the driver is standing at arrivals with a name board instead of you queueing. Payment and Cancellation on Same-Day Bookings — Read This Part

Two rules change when you book close to pickup, and we'd rather you know them now than discover them later:

• You pay at booking. Our "reserve now, pay ¥0 today" option applies to trips booked 48+ hours ahead. Inside 48 hours, the card is charged when you confirm — standard for the industry, but worth saying plainly.
• Free cancellation ends 24 hours before pickup. A booking made 6 hours before pickup is therefore non-refundable from the moment you make it. What protects you instead is flight monitoring and the 90-minute free waiting: the common last-minute worries — delayed flight, slow immigration — are covered without you cancelling anything.

When Same-Day Won't Work — Being Honest

Three cases where we will tell you no, or the booking form will:

• Remote pickup points. A pickup 50 km or more by road from our nearest vehicle base — mountain onsen towns, Takayama, Matsumoto, Karuizawa — needs about 24 hours. The empty car may drive two hours just to reach you; that cannot be conjured same-day.
• Under an hour to pickup. Sometimes a car happens to be close and it works; often it doesn't. Ask in chat — the answer is instant either way — but don't build your plan on it.
• Full-day charters on zero notice. An 8-hour charter ties up a car and driver for a whole day; same-day requests are sometimes possible but far less certain than a point-to-point airport run. The earlier in the day you ask, the better the odds.
