Takayama to the Nakasendo post towns is one of central Japan's most-asked and worst-served connections: there's no direct bus or train. The public route is a relay — the Hida down the valley to Nakatsugawa (via a change at Mizunami or through-running if you're lucky), then the Kita-Ena bus 30 minutes up to Magome — call it half a day with backpacks. A private car runs it in about 2 hours door-to-door, fixed ¥61,000 for up to 4 — and if you're walking the famous 8 km Magome–Tsumago trail, the car can carry your luggage around to the far end while you hike.

On this route, usually yes — public transport here is slow and indirect, so a private car is direct door-to-door and fixed at ¥61,000; for a party of 4 that's ≈¥15,250 each with zero transfers. Per person, one or two travellers with light luggage will still pay less on public transport, and a metered taxi (¥45,000–60,000) can come in under our fixed price too — the private car wins on luggage, group size and not changing trains, not on being the cheapest.

A taxi's real advantage is that it's there without booking, and for one or two people with light bags that's often the sensible choice — we won't pretend otherwise. Where it fits less well is the longer run to the Magome & Tsumago post towns. The fare is metered — for this distance it runs about ¥45,000–60,000 with the expressway tolls and booking fee on top, and the meter climbs higher in heavy traffic or with a 20% night surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. Booked through an app, the figure you accept at request time is an estimate — the card is charged whatever the meter and the taxi company's pickup fee actually come to. A sedan taxi seats only 4 with room for a bag or two, can't fit a child seat, and with a language barrier it's hard to explain exactly where you need to go. We're fixed at ¥61,000 — a guaranteed all-in price, with tolls and any night surcharge included; no pickup fee, no return fee, no clock running at red lights or in traffic, and apart from waiting beyond the free allowance nothing else is ever charged — and you get a premium Alphard or a HiAce (up to 9 passengers), child seats on request, and a driver who picks you up at your door, on time.
A note before comparing: Uber's premium tiers (Black / Premier) only cover pickups in Japan's major metro areas and a handful of airports, and Takayama isn't on Uber's published coverage list as of July 2026 — so for this pickup it's usually not a bookable option at all. Uber's standard tier, where the app has cars, dispatches a regular metered taxi (about ¥45,000–60,000 here). Our fixed ¥61,000 is booked and confirmed in advance with tolls included, with a HiAce (up to 9 passengers) available — in areas like this, pre-arranged is really the only door-to-door that you can count on.
Before pickup we text or email you a link to your booking page — your driver's name, car and plate once assigned, and a chat with your driver or our team. The driver then meets you at your Takayama pickup point and loads your luggage. You leave exactly when you want; we handle the route, tolls and parking.
Per seat, public transport usually wins on paper. But one full-size HiAce (up to 9 passengers) is ¥67,000 fixed for the whole vehicle: ¥7,444 per person with 9 aboard, ¥11,167 with 6 — door-to-door, luggage loaded for you, no station transfers. And since nothing bookable at a taxi rank, on Uber or on a chauffeur app in Japan seats more than 5, from 6 people the van isn't just competitive per person — it's the only way the whole group rides in one vehicle.
The Alphard seats up to 4 with 4 large suitcases plus personal bags on your lap (with fewer passengers, empty seats carry luggage too: passengers plus large suitcases up to 8); the HiAce seats up to 9 with 9 large suitcases (passengers plus large suitcases up to 18) — a full-size van that Uber and the taxi apps don't offer (their largest options seat 5) and that jumbo taxis only match by advance reservation through a taxi company, so your whole group stays together in one vehicle. We can't see your bags in advance, so if passengers plus large suitcases go over those totals, we'd suggest the HiAce or a second car — a suggestion, not a requirement. Infant and child seats (both forward-facing) and booster cushions are ¥2,000 each and need to be booked in advance.
A private transfer is a direct ride. One short stop on the way — under 30 minutes, such as a photo or a convenience store — can be added with Driver assistance (¥3,000 Alphard / ¥4,000 HiAce) when you book; write the stop in your booking notes. For two or more stops, or any stop of 30 minutes or more, book a private charter by the hour instead — the car waits while you sightsee. On drives of more than two hours, restroom breaks on the way are free.

It's a three-leg relay: the Hida limited express down to Nakatsugawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours with the connection), then the Kita-Ena bus about 30 minutes up to Magome — with waits in between, most travelers lose half a day. A private car is about 2 hours door-to-door, fixed ¥61,000 for up to 4.
This is the best trick on this route: the car drops you at Magome, carries your bags the 20 minutes around to Tsumago (or your inn), and you walk the 8 km trail carrying nothing. Yes — many travelers do Takayama → Magome → (hike) → Tsumago → Nakatsugawa Station in one charter day and catch the Shinano onward from there. Ask for the charter quote if you want the car to wait during the hike.
Yes. The price you see is the price you pay — tolls, parking, fuel and taxes are all included. Free waiting at pickup is 30 minutes. Tipping is never expected — never required. The only extras are options you choose yourself, such as child seats or waiting beyond the free allowance. After the free 30 minutes your driver may have another booking, so he can wait longer only if his schedule allows — if you might be late, tell us as early as possible; if he can't wait, we do our best to make it work, and if that isn't possible he has to leave and the ride is cancelled without a refund. Any extra waiting is ¥6,000/hour for an Alphard and ¥8,000/hour for a HiAce, in 15-minute blocks (under 15 minutes is free). If we get no reply from you on any channel the day before and on the day itself, the driver may leave once the free 30 minutes are up — that counts as a no-show and is not refunded.
